So I can fly into Leh over Dec-Feb. What is accessible by road during this period? I really want to explore this unique landscape by land as much as possible. Is it possible to get out of Leh by road, with no real time limits

What will be open?

I know it will be cold. I love the cold. I'll also be returning to Srinigar and Gulmarg in Feb so I'm prepped for -25C

In Leh Dec 24th to 30th 2009

Hey,

I am there for a week this year, again

Pangong Tso will be accessible for sure and so would be nearby monasteries of Shey, Likir, Thiksey.

Nubra is accessible too.

What are your plans?

We can have a lot more fun and save costs by traveling together...

The roads into Ladakh from Kashmir and MAnali are closed all winter, as is the road from Kargil to Zangskar. But all other roads within Ladakh stay open all year. The passes you cross to go to Nubra or Pangong Lake can close for a few days after snow, so those are not great choices if you have a very short time in Ladakh. Anyway, if you have a very short time in Ladakh, why spend it all in cars going to extremely distant places on bumpy roads? Better to stay based at your (heated) hotel room in Leh and do day visits to the many beautiful sights that are within a day trip from Leh.

The nights are cold but the days are usually sunny and warmer.

Dozens of hotels and guest houses stay open for the winter -- more than enough for the number of tourists. I've lived in Ladakh for the past many winters so I can assure you.

Many restaurants stay open but they are the ones that locals like: Indian, Kashmiri, or thukpa-momo places, but not pizza or falafel and other things targeted only to tourists. Through December there are usually enough fresh veg coming in by road from Kashmir, but after the road closes in late Nov or Dec, the veg situation gets a bit dire.
