| definitely possible - can you give more details on what kind of family is yours (ideally are they comfortable sitting in a car for long hours and that too in winding roads) Its close to 7/8 hours one way to Nubra and close to 6 hours to Pangong Tso Journey to Leh itself is a great fun from either Srinagar or Manali too bad you want to skip it - may be next time. You have also not mentioned how long you intend to stay in Ladhak ? Dont think there would be any issue with hotels - as most would be in process of opening after winter( you might be lucky to get some off season discount)

| Yes, there are plenty of hotels open in May in Ladakh. The roads will probably be open to Panggong and Nubra, but both of those are long journeys on rough roads. If there is snow either road can be blocked for a few days. If you want to spend your whole holiday in all-day rough jeep rides, and can risk being stuck for a few days, then you should try to do both. Otherwise, you would have a much nicer time in Ladakh if you move a little slower and see more of central Ladakh within reach of Leh, instead. |

| Hi sorry for the delay As NIR said you will be able to get a good discount in May since the season offically starts by June end. Try out Oriental guest house which has good service - is run by trustworthy people and has rooms in all budget starting from Rs 500 /- remmber to bragain ( do not book in advance that way you can bragain and check your options once in Leh) I am not too sure of taxi charges since I have always used my vehicle ( but good possibility of getting a bragain there as well if you try ) The first day or two will be consumed in acclimiization depending upon the family memebers ( dont rush it and dont overlook any headaches/ diziness / loss of apetite ) Day 1 can be spent going around Leh town - the market- shanti stupa etc Day 2 if all of you are feeling okay can be used to go to Shey - Thikse - Hemis ( Hemis is too commercialism for my liking but your family might like it) Ps: plenty of stay option in Nubra just ask in Diksit or Hunder ( you have snow leopard hotel in Hunder) Day 3/4 You can leave for Nubra valley ( spend the night in Hunder or Diksit ) and come back next day Day 5 A day trip to Pangong Tso is very much possible and would be a rewarding experience Day 6/7 can be spent visting Alchi and if you start real early even a visit to Lamayuru is possible - that way you can view the famous moon landscape ( you can if required spend the night in Lamayuru and be back in Leh by noon next day) Day 7 can be spent doing any last minute shopping and look around Leh ( since most flights leave in morning try to spend day 7 in Leh and dont take chances of going anywhere too far ) Your children are old enough so I dont see any major health related issues. However if spending a night in Lamayuru you might face a bit of AMS since its located higher than Leh) Trip to Suru valley is not recommended since if your vehivle breaks down you might be stuck and may not be able to make it back in time to catch your return flight |

| Royal Punjabi, there is no rainy season at all in Ladakh. It is desert. That is why there is no greenery on the mountains. Some years there is no rain at all in Ladakh, and some years there are a few days or even a week of rain. May is likely to be very dry. |

Leh is same altitude as Lamayuru , just rechecked it on Google Earth. I second what Non-Indian Resident has said here earlier : think over how much time you want to spend on the ground , and how much you want to spend in a jeep.

I'll take your word for it about the altitude, however the pointr I was trying to make was - I have seen more cases of Mild to acute AMS in Lamayuru than anywhere in LehRs 900 is more towards there normal rate - didn't you bargain ? | |
