Lamayuru Yuru-Kabgyat-festival
Hi,
Ill visit the Hemis Tse-Chu-festival and am wondering wether its rewarding to visit the Lamayuru festival also. Are these festivals quite different or is the course much the same? phacops |

Frankly, if I had to choose between the two, I'd go to the Yuru Kabgyat. You'll see little different (to the untrained eye) between the two festivals, and Lamayuru's much less of an (unintentional) circus.

I am also planning to go to Yuru Kabgyat (Lamayuru). Just wondering what is the best--as in cheap and easy--way to get there. Also, what kind of accomodations are there in Lamayuru?
Thanks for the help, Bopper |

Phacops,
I got a flight from Chandigarh to Leh, but I was wondering how to get from Leh to Lamayuru. Is there a bus? What about jeeps? Anyone ever been to Lamayuru? Will it be hard to find accomodations during the festival? Bopper |

Westward bound buses , towards, Kargil, pass the monastery. No idea how crowded it will get during this festival (stayed there two winter weeks once ... not crowded..) MountainGirl mentioned in a earlier post (All about Ladakh) that there is a monastery guest house now. Lots of other good info there.
There is a nice article and photos on the dance tradition at Lamayuru here |

The Lamayuru Tse-Chu-festival is really worth visiting. Its not at all crowded (perhaps 500 - 700 visitors, compared tonearly 10,000 in Hemis!!
Accommodations during the festival are usually booked in advance and camping is advisable (I spread my sleeping bag on the roof of the former gompa hotel, so I enjoyed the luxury of a cold shower). Most interesting for me has been the Choglomsar festival, which is not listed in any festival calendar. So ask your guesthouse owner for local festivals too. phacops |
