Isn't leh at ~3200M? In which case sleeping at Tangste which if we guess is at 4000M would mean a jump of ~2600ft which is over safe acclimatization limits?

Fallingrain cites the altitudes of airports , when there is one . The airport (3486 acc. to Fallingrain) is lower than the Main Bazar , and Changspa is higher than the rest of Leh. 3500 to 3550 is the altitude given by practically everyone , and it checks out in Google Earth.
It´s hard to find places below 3400 along the valley , and this was one of my points in my Srinagar-Leh post: the road gives you a chance to stop both at 2700 and 3100. Nubra along the Shyok is around 3200. No practical bearing for those wanting to go on to Pangong etc since there will be a night in Leh before anyway. It may or may not be the reason I walked in to the wall on my walkout after a week in Nubra , and I had to put in an extra night just over 4000. |

my bad, but still it would be more than 1600ft altitude gain which according to the AMS studies is above safe accent guidelines which hover at 1k feet a night.

"- If possible, you should spend at least one night at an intermediate elevation below 3000 meters. - At altitudes above 3000 meters (10,000 feet), your sleeping elevation should not increase more than 300-500 meters (1000-1500 feet) per night. - Every 1000 meters (3000 feet) you should spend a second night at the same elevation." OK , Korzok would be 600+ meters - well , it´s not a perfect world. One bonus point with the Nubra leg , taken just before Pangong Tso , would be going 5300+ back to Leh , giving some positive acclimitization stress. ---------------- Now playing: Angélique Kidjo - Itche Koutche via FoxyTunes |

Well, I guess we will just stick to the original plan of sleeping at Tangtse right now. Once we reach there and depending on the severity (or hopefully, the lack of it) of AMS, maybe we will improvise on the plans!
A couple of other questions: 1. Any specific guest houses at Leh that any of you would recommend? We are thinking of Padma Guest House, around Fort Road. 2. In the interest of 'optimising' our backpacks, do we really need sleeping bags? We will probably be halting at Keylong on the way back to Manali. Thanks! |

Frankly Padma GH is much inside and expensive around 1k i guess. See Tso Moriri GH on the main road and Rs 500. A new one called Mayflower closer to the main Fort road (in on bylane) is for 300.
Keylong you will get hotels. I doubt you would use ya sleeping bag |

Apparently, the HPTDC bus between Leh and Manali has a night stay in tents at Keylong. We are hoping to take a share jeep to Manali, but in case we end up taking the bus, wouldn't we need sleeping bags for the tents? Does it get really cold in the nights in July? |

Are yuo sure it has a night stay at Keylong, to what i know is that HPTDC buses stop at Sarchu whereas the JKTRC ones stop at Keylong.
Anyways Keylong have decent hotels so no need. Infact Sarchu tents would have quilts etc so you need not carry ! |
