Ladakh travel planning-help needed!
Hello,
Myself and a friend are planning a trip to Ladakh from June 10-27 2005. We have our rndtrp plane tix from south india, but nothing else is booked. I was trying to book a tour package through a travel agency, but I am not satisfied with the itinerary they've given me. Since I've never been to Ladakh before, I don't know what is possible to see and do in the time we have, or the best way to schedule it. Below is my wish list of places, etc: 1. Hemis Festival (June 17/18). We arrive in Leh on June 10, so if we spend a couple days acclimatizing, I thought we might be able to arrange a trek to Hemis for the festival...is this possible? 2. Nubra Valley-Hunder, Diskit, etc. I'd like to take a jeep out to this area and then trek and camp or stay at guesthouses here. I've heard you can arrange a camel safari to the dunes in this region. Is this possible? How many days should we spend in this region? 3. Tso Moriri, Tso Pangong, Tso Kar. We'd like to head out to this area, camp overnight at least, and check out some wildlife and the nomads of the region. 4. Lamayuru festival (june 23/24/25?). Travel by jeep to this area, attend festival, and maybe also do some trekking and sightseeing along the way. 5. Zanskar region. Is it possible for us to do any trekking in this region? Or is it too much for the time we have? 6. Rupushu Valley...trekking? Since we have a limited amount of time, we were planning on hiring a jeep for the duration to have at our disposal, but to get in as much outdoor trekking time as possible while at the same time covering as much of Ladakh as possible. (Possibly having the jeep meet us at certain points along the way if we are trekking from point A to point B). Any information and recommendations are welcome. Especially if you know of a reliable Ladakhi agency with Ladakhi guides and experience trekking. I don't want the bullshit tourist thing...I want a chilled out, authentic experience with nice people and knowledgeable guides. We are foreigners, but live in India and are Indian residents (with the proper RP paperwork). |

Also, can you recommend good places to stay in or near Leh? A nice guesthouse or hotel with a garden courtyard and/or views with hot water would be nice. We don't need to spend a lot of money on a top-end hotel. Just a decent, friendly, clean place to rest our heads would be good.
