| Congratulations Amar, seems like you have had a great time. well we are planning to drive from mumbai to leh via manali & back the same way. our original plan was to start on 14th jun but seems like it will shift to 27th. since you have done the leh-manali by road can you give us an idea about the road condition? we also look forward to read more about your experience. |

| Maha Guru Member | Personally speaking i preferred the Srinagar - Leh route more than the Manali-Leh route. Even though i traveled the Srinagar-Leh route in the last seat of the deluxe JKRTC bus compared to the middle row window seat in a sumo. In detail driving down from Leh to Manali the roads are decent till Surchu (including the pass which is manageable) but once you cross to the Himachal side the roads get worst and very dusty/muddy. Rothangla roads are no good either... Manali to koksar (After Rohtang) - OK Koksar to Keylang - bad Keyland to ZingZing bar - OK - Muddy/Dusty ZingZing bar to Sarchu - very bad - Muddy/Dusty Sarchu to Leh - decent / manageable. Also i feel the conditions of travel/stay are more harsh in the Manali-Leh route as compared to Srinagar-Leh route. If you opting for the Manali route stay in Keylong and leave early next day to reach Leh. Otherwise Kargil is not a problem in the Srinagar route. Picture and other stuff would upload shortly... let my work pressure get a little easy ! |

| Maha Guru Member | For all planning to go to Leh.. there is this travel agent for local tours called Vajra Voyages. Contact - Gyatso on 9906999135. I really liked his services. During my visit the season had not yet kicked in, but he did run around for getting people to share the taxi. I had spoken to few agents but found him the most forthcoming and helpful. Guess you'll can pay him a visit, he is opp the SBI ATM at Leh. |
