Happens all the time , but mostly organised from the other end : put up a note , outside Dzomsa for example , or just talk to people you meet , then find your guide.

Hi Grizzly...
You sure are doin' the wise thing by deciding to not go for a solo trek in Ladakh... Well, I did, and am lucky to have come back alive...!!! And whether it's the centre of town at the Dzomsa (officially the Meeting Place) or at any of the walls on the road of Changspa area, rest assured, u'll manage to get company... About the Dzomsa - it serves fresh apricot and seabuck-thorn berry juices... and more importantly, they refill water bottles with pressure-boiled water (water boils at 78 degrees in Leh) for a nominal cost... mainly done to prevent more empty bottles being dumped in Leh... (they also dispose off your not-wanted bottles and batteries and claim to give them a decent burial on the otherside of the mountain...!)... Dzomsa also runs a breakfast centre nearby... Cheers...! |

same here, but I might arrive a bit later (begin of July, not sure, yet, as I first travel Kinnaur and Spiti in June). Maybe we'll see each other there on a trek. ![]()

![]() Water actually boils close to 90 degrees in Leh : I´ve had reason to check this a number of times as it makes a very strong point about how efficient boiling water is altitude. This means that it exceeds the norm for hospital disinfection units. The highaltitudemedicine site emphatically says that water is safe after boiling , even at Everest Base Camp. If you´re too lazy , or cheap , to walk down to Dzomsa you can try the ten rupee solution : SODIS. Fill clear bottle with water , place it on a tin roof (that could be the hardest part in Leh) in the morning , drink it in the afternoon. Sounds like a joke , actually well documented. |

Hiya...
Lotsa things about Ladakh which are supposed to be highest or some other 'est' actually may not be so... Even the "Khardung-la" actually is NOT the highest motorable pass in the world...! Though the most photographed signboard right on top of the pass says so...! (Well, even I have a pic against that signboard for memory's sake...!) About the water boiling temperature - actually that would depend on a whole lotta factors, altitude mainly... Cheers...! Ladakh in 5 Days...???!!! (Or 6 or 7 or 10 or 15...!!!) |

Hey Shetty, I am interested in this trip as well. I live in pune and am struggling to find partners for this trip. Also the link provided by Balvar is very useful. I think it is a good idea to travel mumbai delhi & back by flight to save 2 days but then again, air tickets can be cheap only if booked well in advance. but if we go all the way by train & back then we lose around 5-6 days just in travelling. However I am definitely interested in this trip to ladakh and manali etc.

SODIS project was pretty interesting. In fact I see some projects already been done successfully in Assam and Tamilnadu. Quite a simple way to get over microbial infectants. But I guess, alumina is the only way to get rid of contaminants to get clear drinking water, after of course SODIS takes care of microbial stuff??? |

looking for chhang recipe from Ladakh
When I was in Ladakh a few years ago I tied this amazing home made Chhang, which tasted like very mild beer. I have not been able to find a decent recipe online. Can one of the travelers look into it please?
