Treat all travel in the Himalaya as a bushwalk or trek on wheels. That means all camping equipment for extreme conditions and the ability and sense to make good decisions about what you wear, do and eat/drink.
Mountain tent, good s/bag, thermals, shell jacket, fleece jacket, headwear, down vest, gloves, strong boots and so on. Carry a small stove if possible and fuel for it (gas stove works best IMO) and nourishing food. Not dried fruit or snackfood, even if you are overweight;-) My ploy is to carry a cooked meal or two from a good restaurant in a sealed plastic container. And dried meals sold in outdoor stores (not sure these exist in India). Carry 1-2 litres of water. Aim to be self sufficient, imagine no one else might be around for a day or two, and you will do fine. |

Package sounds decent
Ideally if you hire taxis - these would be the approx fares (these are not accurate fares) Leh - Nubra valley - RS 7000 with night halt at your expense Leh _ Pangong Tso - Rs 3000 - 4000 same day return Leh - Shey- Hemis - Rs 2000 - 3000 Local Leh Rs 1000 so based on this your deal seems to be okay

Just to clarify - I am certain Vikarm meant use the Diamox if you get any AMS related sickness / symptoms
As in any medicine , Diamox should not be used until and unless it is felt essential (also you need to consult your family doctor on Diamox ) Minor Headaches or breathless can be tackled by taking adequate rest and as Vikarm suggested by drinking plenty of water. Avoid beverages like Tea/Coffee and liquor Keep the windows open if possible so as to let in air ( there wont be any fans for air circulation) Not certain if Lamayuru has a medical centre - I didnt see one - but it would be advisable to investigate and identify where the nearest aid centre is (but no need to get paranoid about it). |

Many people (including me) take Diamox the first couple of days at altitude, or when unavoidably climbing a significant elevation in a day or so - say 700-1000m. Dosage can be doubled if one still needs assistance.
In medical terms this type use of this drug is called prophylactic; a preventive measure. Dispensers of standard medical advice, like general practitioners, are unlikely to know much of anything except broad (but not deep) generalisations about dealing with high elevations. You can read more reliable information on appropriate medical websites. Main thing is rest, drink a good amount of water, tea/coffee is fine being rich in antioxidants and increasing blood flow - which incidentally is the major effect of Diamox, it helps oxygenate the blood stream, keep sat levels higher than they might have otherwise been. No alcohol, carbo-rich diet also. But rest is key. Acclimatisation is about the body learning to use dramatically lower oxygen concentrations...aerobic fitness really helps once acclimatised, but fit people get no advantage until that stage happens. Most of us feel much better after one week, and you get 80% of normal strength after 8 weeks - but you still puff a lot when working hard. Do more each day, take long slow walks. |

Daytime temperature right now is still around twenty degrees , and Leh has just had it´s first nights of frost ( -2 this morning) . That won´t change dramatically in coming two weeks , maybe around -5 night temps.
Fair chances of seeing the surrounding mountains getting some snow, very slim in the warm conditions down in the valley. Get some basic sleeping gear , thermal underwear & a light balaclava for the night & mornings . Daytime good sunprotection is the most important thing.

I have always used Diamox and never suffered any problems of AMS.
Drink lots of water and hot beverages, with occasional electral, to stave off dehydration. Carry along dry fruits - pista, badam, raisins, cashewnuts - and also soups/noodles, which can always be heated up somewhere en route even if you do not get any other food. Both Khardung la and Chang la are always kept open, although temporary disruptions happen with heavy snowfall. There is continuous army presence (and support) on way to Pangong Tso, although there is none after Mahe (on the Tsomoriri road). Zanskar Valley closes down once it snows in Pensi la and the road is closed after Purkichey.

Plan Early
Hi there...
if You are going to leh by plane thats good....but still doubtful..... around that time and beyond the snow fields may not allow you to be on the places like khardungla....nubra valley ..even pangong so its better take some other advices and plan early atleast before 10 days.....right after diwali........ well for your information....me and my friend are leaving delhi a day after diwali only...probably on 19th.....but we are going by road via manali...if you want you can join us that time.... |
