I went to Ladakh couple of years ago in the month of August..was there till aug 17. At that time there was no snow...If u want to see snow, better go in the month of (late)OCT or NOV. In september, winter just sets in...so I doubt u can see snow at that time. But in winter, u can't roam around much bcos most of the places will be inaccesible as roads get blocked bcos of snow...even Rohtang pass and Srinagar-Leh road is also closed by end of Sept.
U can go in Sept but I suggest u to go in late August or early Sept at least....

While going I took flight from Delhi. Return by road-leh->manali->delhi. I did not face any problem with acclimatization. If ur mom is accompanying u, then u can go to manali and stay there for 1/2 days, so that she could get acclimatized with the altitude and then proceed to leh(by road). this is just a suggestion....
reply if u have still queries

Hello LikeToTravel,

Its perfectly wise to make a plan for early september. I think this year the Ladakh festival will also start on 1st September. You probably will not see snow in Ladakh around the start of September, but you will see it on your journey.

Leh is a plain area of the Ladakh valley. All access to Leh are through high pitch mountain passes. When it snow in the Ladakh valley, all the routes going via hills are also blocked with snow. So a reasonable expectation is to get snow up in the mountains than in the plains of Leh.

I know of couple of guys from Bangalore who are doing 1st -15th Septmber on train- bus- taxi.

Cheers
Hymz

thanks all of you for your suggestions...but still have some queries...

My Leave is from 30th August to 7th september...by 7 th September I am supposed to be back to Hyderabad...

I want to visit the places below...Is it possible to cover my travel plan within the timespan? Or should I drop out something?I don't want to make the trip too hectic as well.

1. Pangong Lake+ Tsomoriri Lake
2. Khardungla+ Nubra valley
3. Local site seeing
4. Hemis
5. White water rafting

In this case can we go by Road from Delhi or srinagar?

Any suggestion in the itenerary is highly appriciated...

First of all I wouldn´t recommend anyone going directly from Leh (3500) and staying overnight at Pangong Tso (4500) , let alone two nights.Making it thru the first night doesn´t mean that you are safe from altitude sickness the next.

Making it in the beginning of your stay maximises the risk.Have at least three nights at Leh´s altitude before thinking of sleeping higher. You don´t have to sacrifice anything to fullfill this , just shuffle things around so the highest night stays comes last.

Not sure about how physical the rafting is , but I would also avoid that while struggling with acclimatisation the first days. Some experience mild nausea the first day(s) , spinning around in the rapids could become a problem - also to the person next to you.

Early September is fine, though by mid and end it starts to get colder.

With regards to your plan to go directly from Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri, how are you planning to do that?

It would really be a long drive and you will end up traveling for almost the entire day and wouldn’t have time to enjoy the trip.

My personal recommendation would be to club your plan to visit Hemis, Thiksey and Shey with Pangong Tso i.e. visit these places while returning from Pangong Tso (they fall enroute) and save that day for a visit from Leh to Tso Moriri.

thanks Vistet and yogesh....
as pointed out by Yogesh I am clubbing Hemis,Thiksy vth Pangong and Tso moriri...so I will have 3 days for Leh-pangong-tso Moriri-hemis-thiksey -Leh...is this good one or need more time?
I am planning to travel this route by shared Jeep...is it feasible? I mean what are the other options?

It seems like Yogesh had been there many times...can you please suggest to add/remove some portion from this itenerary to make this trip a comfortable one...since my mom vll b thr I don't want to make it too hectic...
thanks guys

Liketotravel,

I had done a very similar itiniery last year in august. I did the rafting on the 3rd day.
i would suggest not to have any sightseeing programs on the first day. have the leh sightseeing on second day afternoon and the rafting on the third day.

i donot know if you are experienced in rafting. I was a novice and it was pretty gruelling for me. Its about 25 kms and lasts about 4 hours. Its amazingly beautiful.

But there is no opportunity to get down in the middle if you feel unwell. Also, even if you feel unwell you cannot stop the rowing, because if you stop the rowing you will feel very very cold. So attempt it only when you are properly acclimatised and in fighting fit condition.

Not a very nice time to visit sikkm, not just because of the weather but also doe to the numerous landslides and poor condition of the roads. If you want to go then you will have to be willing to change jeeps at numerous places and allow longer longer travel times.
