Watch the altitude, read the thread. Nubra is not higher than Leh bu the khardung La is. See Vistets warnings on taxi/bus breakdowns at the wrong height. i'd spend an extra night in Leh
Dont know about the road conditions
F***ing cold. 4 season bag and serious down jacket
The passes are supposed to be all year but check elsewhere on the site for updates
The Indus guest house where I stay in the summer is open they tell me - by the wasshing stream off Fort Road. there will be others.

Leh Market in December

Hi,

In Mid December are any of the wonderful restaurants open?

HOw is the food scene like in Leh? I am thinking of spending a week just chilling around in a White Leh. Will I see people in Market and road?

@Avinash: I like what you are planning

Read that again , and take notice : cold the instant you move out of the sun , and ... well , worse by night. Nights now around -10 .

Hey....Even I planning for visiting Leh Ladhakh but what the Travel Agents and people in Kashmir told that the flights are all uncertain and the tempratures would be like -15 to -20....there would be rare chances if you find any hotel or restraunt there

Well it depends what you are looking for..

I am sure more than enough Guest Houses are available and as someone mentioned, a few restaurants are open all year...

You may not get an exotic food menu, but otherwise it should be just fine!

Cheers!

Avinash it seems you are not staisfied with your maiden trip this july

If you want to go - then go but as the locals said be prepared for flight delays and getting stucks there for few days

Even I wish I had been in Delhi - Ladhak is so much closer ( but the Delhi heat is too much for me though I have spent close to 12 growing up years there)

There is not often snow in Leh but if there is, Changla and Khardongla can close for a few days, and occasionally Khardong closes for up to a week or more.

Your itinerary sounds very heavy on car travel time. Is that what you enjoy? Make sure it's a heated car! And going over a high pass on day 3 is pushing your altitude acclimatisation a little too hard.

Yes, lots of restaurants are open all winter but they are standard restaurants for locals: Indian and Kashmiri meals, or Tibetan thukpa-and-momo places. Not the pizza and falafel you see in the summer.

Forgot to mention this earlier : the Ladakhi New year is December 17th , should be nice wherever you are.

Really ? Never heard that before. My impression so far is that massive snowfall is rare ( like February and September last year ) , and normally cleared within days .
