Abhay, I hear you. Even while I was posting, I was partly expecting such an answer - thanks for enlightening

Similarly, bullets have about 3cm less ground clearance than pulsars/karizma, but they take offroading just as well. Your point is very valid.

Speaking of which, could you please PM me your views on passenger cars (sub 5L segment) - given the kinda riding my friend does, he wants to buy a old mahindra jeep, and restore it, it for offroading - but given practicality/office use considerations, what would be a good car that is decent fun for cities, good AC, and has impeccable offroad ability? The kinda car that takes oodles of thrashing

Mucho thanks in advance.

Here is my itinerary. Please provide your comments. I still have time for minor tweaks which I can consider after getting inputs from you all.

Day 1 - Mumbai-Delhi by Train [Depart at 4.30pm]
Day 2 - Reach Delhi [Arrive around 10pm]. Tour the city and leave for Manali by coach/bus
Day 3 - Arrive Manali. Visit tourist spots or relax. Overnight
Day 4 - In Manali. Go for a 10 km trek (my agent is deciding the best trek). Overnight.
Day 5 - Manali - Jispa. Overnight camping.
Day 6 - Jispa - Sarchu. [Visit Deepak Tal and Suraj Tal near Barlacha La] Overnight Camping.
Day 7 - Sarchu - Tso Kar - Overnight Camping.
Day 8 - Tso Kar - Korzok village - Overnight camping.
Day 9 - Explore in and around Korzok village and Tso Morari. Overnight camping.
Day 10 - Korzok - Leh - overnight in hotel
Day 11 - Sightseeing in Leh - Leh Palace, Namgyal Tsemo, Leh mosque, Gompa Tsemo, Stok palace Museum, Tiksey Monastery. Overnight in Hotel. Any more suggestions to visit?
Day 12 - Leh - Pangong Lake - Drive down to lake and back to Leh. Overnight in Leh.
Day 13 - Leh - Hunder - Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung la pass. Camp at Hunder.
Day 14 - Hunder - Diskit - Panamik - Visit Hunder and Diskit gompas. Then drive to Panamik, crossing river shyok and then driving along river Nubra to Panamik (which is the last village on old silk route). Overnight camping.
Day 15 - Panamik - Leh - Drive down to Leh via Khardung La pass. Enroute visit Taeger and Samsthaling Gompas. Overnight in Leh.
Day 16 - Leh - Delhi via Air Deccan (Only flight Available). Delhi to Mumbai via train.
Day 17 - Reach Mumbai and drown in depression after a wonderful trip.

Please provide inputs about this itinerary. This is my 99% final itinerary.

A few questions:

1- We are planning to hire a qualis. Which is a better car - Qualis, Innova, or Scorpio.

2. Do you think BSNL mobile as well as GPRS (Internet connection) would be available in most of these remote places?

Thanks and looking to hear from you guys.
I wonder why the whole discussion gets "closed" in and aroun Leh alone. When you are there... why not consider returning from Srinagar to wherevere on plains?? I particularly find Srinagar great after Ladakh because of the HUGE contrast it provides. Afterall, you are anyway JUST there... And to go there (Srinagar) again in future to do Srinagar is going to take a hell out of you!!!

I would strongly suggest that please consider Srinagar in your schedule, more so if you have never done before, and I bet you would not regret. On the Leh-Srinagar drive you can see : Lamayuru, beautiful Ladakh Range of kind unseen on Manali-Leh route, Magnetic Hill, Sonmerg and Baltal (just next to amazing Amarnath Caves which I did in absolutely unplanned manner on chopper on the way to Srinagar in August 2005), Soothing Dal lake (my all time favourite with romantic songs on a Shikara ride), beautiful Gulmarg in the Valley... so many things while you return from Srinagar. So instead of returning from Leh... why not consider Srinagar. Srinagar, separately, any other time is going to take a hell lot of time and money for anyone.

Yesssss.... Manali-Leh-Ladakh is great and absolutely amazing... but why not end it with Srinagar which is such a HUGE contrast and beautiful-par-imagination on that???? Get out of that all time discussions on AMS and Altitude and macho talk and see what is just round the corner... right there on the west of Leh??? I can tell you from my all 3 driving experiences last 3 years that Jozilla Pass (Leh-Srinagar road) is far more crazy, lovely and enchanting than usually talked about Manali-Leh road. Imagine driving all the way in cold desert of Ladakh... and now you cross the Jozilla and you are in an amazingly greeen, romantic and soothing world of Srinagar. You just cann't have a bigger contrast, I think so. Yes constraints of time and everything... but wanna make the whole trip wholesome. Try it.

For me... Ladakh must end with Srinagar.

Regards
Abhay
