Welcome to IM!! Why don't you post your questions here ? Maybe, someone else who are going that way would like to go through them as well; Isn't that the sole purpose of forums here? Besides,in that way,you may get to hear many other's opinion as well, not just only one,as it may not be possible for one to explain everything, even though they had been there themselves sometime before! Good luck with your trip though ![]() Last edited by soledad : May 13th, 2008 at 17:11. Reason: spell check |

What if we dont have a four-wheel drive
"Assumptions : I am assuming you are flying in from and flying back to Delhi . And that you will book yourself a four-wheel drive to move around once you are in Leh..."
What if we dont have a four-wheel drive to move around in leh?? Actually i might be travelling alone(in may last week)...so what do I do in that case |

Hiya Guys...
Thanks PatrickStPanther and RupamGupta for your appreciation... The former, especially so, as that apparently was his very first post - a note of appreciation about the travelogue / itinerary guide / call it what u may...! As our good friend Nick rightly said, anyone is welcome to send anyone a message directly too - and for that Rupam you are welcome to send me a private message for any further customized help in planning your itinerary... And yes, if it's posted on this thread itself, it surely will be all the better as it would then be accessible to the maximum number of people possible... About the one question that Amitgyl asked - Well a four-while drive vehicle is a must if you are planning to cross any of the many high altitude passes... It's much safer and easier to maneouver around... And by the way, at that altitude, even the macho 350 cc bullet bikes behave like they were mopeds...! Any vehicle would need oxygen to burn up fuel - so you need to be prepared... But all this is only if you are planning to drive from Manali to Leh or from Leh to Nubra or Pangong Tso... As that would involve crossing over right through those high passes... And if you are alone, leave your details with all the travel shops (Every second shop is a travel shop) - there are lotsa solo travellers and you have posters all over town asking for travel companions for Nubra / Pangong / Lamayuru etc etc... And do check out Dzomsa, the meeting place in the heart of town...! Cheers...!!! |

Go Leh Via Sirinagar not via Manali
Hi frnz
Last year in Aug we ( me and my friend) went on 2 bikes to Leh....we started our journey from Ludhian. Following was Itinerary and covered total 2790 km in 12 days ( Avg 233 km per day ) BF- Breakfast, L-Lunch, NH- Night Halt, Day 1. (km: 400 )Ludhaina,Pb (BF), Phagwara, Hoshirapur, Dasua, Patahnkot(L), Samba ( j&k), Udhampur, Patnitop ( NH). Day 2.( km: 220) Patnitop( BF), Sirinagar ( NH) Day 3.(Km: 175) Sirinagra(BF), Gulmarg (L), Sirinagar local site seeing, dal lake ( NH) Day 4.(Km: 245) Sirinagar, Sonmarg (L), Dras, Kargil ( NH) Day 5.(Km: 265) Kargil, Btalik sector (BF), Aryan Villages , Bheem , Dha ( L ),Khaltse, Leh loal (NH) Day 6. ( Km :185) Leh DC office for permission (L), Khardungla, Khalsar, Nubra valley , Diskit, Hunder (NH) Day 7. ( Km: 275)Hunder (BF), Penamic, Leh (L), Karu, Chang la, Tangtse ( NH) Day 8. (Km: 50)5:00am at Pangong lake, Spagmic (BF), Spagmic Camping ( NH) Day 9.( Km: 265) Pangong, Spagmic ( BF ), Karu ( L) , Pang (NH) Day 10.( Km: 310) Pang, Sarchu (BF), Kelong (L), Rohtang Pass , Manali (NH). Day 11.(Km: 85) Manali, Naggar( BF), Kullu, Manikarn Sb ( L), 22 km Tracking to Kheer Ganga ( NH ) Day 12.(Km: 315) Kheer Ganga, 22 km Tracking to Manikarn,( L) Kullu, Kartarpur , Ropar, Chandigarh ( NH) So one can have the idea, n can plan accordingly even in short time.... One more thing I will suggest ::: Dont go or come via Manali from Leh if u r going or comming back to Delhi...The Road from Karu to Rohtan (approx 400Km) is in very bad condetion coz road is widenning. Its litly hell to go by this road...So its better to cover 300 more kms in 5 to 6 hr via sirinagra instead of going via Manali... Thanx for the thanx... T.I.P.
Sam... The road widening operation is usually on each year... The one that you refer to - is it something unique this year...? Honestly, the views that are there on 'this' Manali - Leh road are definitely not there on the Srinagar - Leh road... Personally, I would still take this very route even if it was regularly bombarded with craters...! Just kiddin'...! And thanx for the input...! Cheers...! Hiya...
I'm assuming you are planning to do the whole trip by road... Transport is around as much as 50 to 75% of your cost depending on your kinda stay... Either go in for the HP State Govt buses from Manali to Leh and also for the return to cut costs... Or a better option would be to check out the restaurants / cafes of Old Manali to look for other people travelling the same dates and willing to share costs - this is something which is normal and you should not feel hesitant about this... Once in Leh, stay at Changspa, where you'll get ok accommodation for around 200-250 bucks, maybe a bit more... (I didn't wanna tell this in public, but then what the hell...!) Changspa is the Israeli part of Town... While in Leh, again look for people travelling to various places at the time of your choice... Be flexible, and if you see a poster saying that they are looking for one person for a certain place, Go ahead and opt for it... Also, don't wait for the last day to book your return bus ticket... Till date, I'm actually almost embarassed to tell people how much I spent during my two-week stay in Ladakh... (It was hardly anything really)... And rest assured, I wasn't a bit stingy, always ate like a pig, didn't exactly stay like a king but definitely enjoyed myself like one, and extracted the maximum possible from my 14 days in heaven...! Cheers...!!! |
