Get a nest and wings map of Ladakh, its all you need. You might also be able to source outlook traveler map from J&K tourism office.

Rain will only bother you till Rohtang, beyond that there shouldn't be any problems.

You pay about 120 bucks per person - your hotel wala gets it. else go to DC's office (check link above) and get it done yourself. takes 20mins if he's in office!

You need permits for the following areas:

Nubra Valley

Chang La, Pangong Tso and Marsimek La

Tso Moriri

Drok Pa region

You can easily get the permits from the DC's office by submitting an application along with your identity proof. Usually you apply in the morning for permits and get them by afternoon, enough time to get your bike serviced and go to Thiksey.

Thanks Yogesh for valuable info regarding Permits.
we r two guys and option of 4 bikes like Unicorn (Honda),Pulsar 150, Passion, Splendor. can v plan the whole trip on one bike i.e Unicorn (driver and pillion)? or any other option of bikes could be best so that v can finish the trip within specified time frame of 12 or 13 days( Ludhian-srinagar- leh-nubra-pangong-manali-Ludhiana). I do have Bolero SLX with Pegiot Engin, and Maruti 800 (with big tyres of Zen, having more ground clearance) though the journey would be more comfertable in bolero n maruti but i dont think it wd be as exiting as on Bikes. need your expert coments plz.

Sam both of you can go on the same bike, but it wouldn’t be comfortable for either of you. Better take the Pulsar 150 and Unicorn; if they are in good shape then they wouldn’t have any problem climbing the passes.

As for car vs bike, well I am bias towards bikes

Need information on Delhi to Leh trip by bike

Friends,

I planning a trip to Leh by bike. Could you please suggest the best time to visit and other important things need to keep in mind while planning the trip. Also initially i was planning to go there by my Santro but after reviewing few post about that i have decided to buy a second hand bike for the trip. Please let me know which bike will be best for the this kind of route.

I would appreciate your suggestions.

Regds,
Nitin

Nitin the best time would be mid August to mid September, you can take your Santro as well if you are not too scared of getting the underbelly scraped a few times. Though on a motorcycle you will have much more fun!

As for the bike, my recommendation would be to get a first hand motorcycle. Though any motorcycle (one of the guy in my group has done it on a 80cc moped) would make it through the trip, it is better if you get a 150cc or bigger motorcycle.

For rest check out the Ladakh Travel Guide that I wrote.
