| Wandering spirit | Kargil-Zanaskar road to be reopened on May 20 Kargil-Zanaskar road to be reopened on May 20 JAMMU, MAY 15 (PTI) Six months after its closure due to heavy snowfall and avalanches, the 232-km-long Kargil-Padam-Zansakar road in frontier Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir would be reopened for traffic from May 20, a senior official said here today. "We will open up Kargil-Padam-Zanaskar road in Kargil district of Ladakh region after six months on May 20 as the snow clearance work is going on in full swing," Chief Executive Councilor of Kargil Autonomous Hill Development Council (KAHDC), Haji Asgar Ali Karbalaie said. Closed in November last year, this road is the main life line to Zanaskar and Padam towns of the district, which remained cut off from the rest of the country through surface link for six months, he said. The snow clearance work has been completed upto 193 kms out of 232 kms of Kargil-Zanaskar road, he said adding that the work has been further speeded up.

| Wandering spirit | Sure shot news Srinagar-Leh road reopens on Friday Statesman News Service JAMMU, May 16. — The Srinagar-Leh road will be thrown open for traffic from Friday. This was announced by the minister for science and technology, Mr Niwang Rigzin Jora, and minister for youth services, sports and technical education, Haji Nissar Ali, along with senior Border Road Organisation officials during their visit to Sonamarg and Ghumri yesterday. The ministers personally took stock of the snow clearance work on the road and interacted with the BRO officials. They appreciated the BRO’s efforts in clearing the heavy snow on a war footing to ensure plying of traffic on the road on the scheduled date and facilitate the journey for the people of the Ladakh region. Haji Nissar, while interacting with the media, disclosed that under the Prime Minister’s reconstruction programme, Rs 243 crore were being spent on construction of the two-way Srinagar-Leh road. He said this will help removing the biggest bottleneck at Zojila for smooth regulation of traffic on a daily basis. While inspecting the arrangements of Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation for tourists at Sonamarg and Thajiwas, the ministers were apprised of the fact that four tourist huts were in working condition and more such huts were being constructed for tourists |

| The most interesting part of this news item is the plan to widen the Zoji La section to 2 lanes. (Currently, one way traffic moves in different directions at different times of day.) No time table given, though. |
