Is the Manali – Leh road open?

I am getting news that the Manali – Leh road might be closed at this moment. Any one has any idea if it is open or not. Also does any one has the idea how’s the weather from Manali onward?

As per News the Kargil - Leh road is closed and the minimum temperature in Manali is 5 degree which means it could be snowing at Rohtang La. If some body is in area then please let me know the ground details.

Dear Yogesh,

I am not aware of the present status, but in the second week of August, a close friend of mine has travelled on his Bike from Delhi to Jammu via Chandigarh, Manali, Leh>>Panamik>>Leh,Kargil,Drass , Srinagar. It appears the Leh-Srinagar and Srinagar-Jammu Roads have been closed.
----------
In so far as Manali-Leh Road is concerned, it would be better to contact somebody in Manali/ Leh.

In the paper this morning it said that " Heavy snow fall in J&K areas. Many high-altitude areas including parts of Srinagar and Leh National Highway, in Jamu and Kashmir today received heavy snowfall, while incessant rain continued to lash low-lying areas of the state for the last four days...."

It looks like about 6" to 1 foot of snow in most places and snowing heavily in Zojila. No mention of road closures at this stage.

hi every one, i am writing this from the capital of Zanskar Padum. Havent been able to find an STD here, but there is a cybercafe here. once again the rates are a bit pricey at Rs.2 per minute, but it is better then having nothing at all. have posted some photos on bcmtouring, here is the link of those photos check it out…

Killer pictures mate me and a friend of mine are planning to hit Zanskar on the 3rd of october i hope rohtang pass is open at that point in time. we are starting from darcha and will return from kargyak due to time constraints.

Ok we are looking at few things that we arent sure of.

1) Tents on hire ( if we can get sleeping bag )
2) Porter's who can cook during the trek and guide us as well.
3) How dangerous can the altitude sickness be and are the villager's approachable ??
4) Since we are going to baralacha pass we will be on a bike is there a way we can park our bike at darcha, would that be safe ??

Please need info asap since time is running out.

boom

EL ES DEE sorry for the late reply, here is the info that you wanted to know:

1) You can get the tents etc. from Delhi and Manali; if you are going with a porter then I guess it might be best to hire tents from Manali as well from the tour/trek operator where you will be getting porters from. In case you want to rent them from Delhi then check out the price list of Carbin India located in Okhla http://www.bcmtouring.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=185

2) I guess its best if you arrange for that from Manali it self from the numerous trek/tour operators.

3) AMS can be quite dangerous if one is not careful, my advice is to carry at least 3-4liters of water with you at all time and drink it regularly. Last year I ran out of water before Baralacha La and because of that I got a nasty taste of AMS. Beside this you can mix glucose in water and drink it every 30-45minutes and it would help a lot. Beside this don’t forget to carry Diamox, here is a comprehensive article on AMS http://www.bcmtouring.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=117

4) Parking the bike at Darcha can be a bit of an issue, I guess it would be better to park it in a village rather then in Darcha. If you are getting the porter from Manali then make sure you tell them about your requirement for a safe hideaway for your bikes while your trekking, I am sure they will be able to find a safe parking spot. Else get in touch with the army folks there, they might be able to help you out.

More stats of the trip, here is the route that I took for this ride:

Day1: Delhi – Chandigargh – Manali

Day2: Manali – Keylong – Darcha – Sarchu

Day3: Sarchu – Pang – Upshi – Leh

Day4: Leh – Thiksey – Leh

Day5: Leh – Karu – Chang La – Tangste – Lukung – Spangmik – Lukung (Pangong Tso)

Day6: Lukung – Tangste – Chang La – Karu – Leh

Day7: Leh – Upshi – Chumathang – Tso Moriri – Korzok

Day8: Korzok – Tso Moriri – Korzok

Day9: Korzok – Chumathang – Upshi – Leh

Day10: Leh – Lamayuru – Kargil

Day11: Kargil – Sanko – Parakachik – Rangdum (Suru Valley)

Day12: Rangdum – Penzi La – Padum (Zanskar Valley)

Day13: Padum (Zanskar Valley)

Day14: Padum – Penzi La – Rangdum

Day15: Rangdum – Sanko – Kargil – Drass

Day16: Drass – Zoji La – Sonamarg – Srinagar

Day17: Srinagar – Jammu – Pathankot

Day18: Pathankot – Phagwada – Ropar – Chandigarh – Ambala – Delhi

Clocking 3865kms over some of the roughest terrain in the world and still my bike did what she does best, powered her way through each and every thing. She gave quite a good overall mileage of 42 kms per liter of petrol and the best mileage that I got was an amazing 48.36kilometers to a liter!!! Not at all bad for a four and half year old Bajaj Pulsar 180 Classic, which has clocked roughly 50k kms over the years!

Here is a photo of the magnificent Tso Moriri
