Inner Line Permit
Inner Line Permit
Hi. I'm in Leh at the moment and am trying to sort out an inner line permit for Nubra Valley. I'm travelling on my own and wish to take the loacl bus to Nubra. In the past Travel Agents were quite happy to organise permits for just 1 person (they just seeemed to find 3 other names to bring the number up to the 4required by the police). However it seems that with a cahnge in police personel travel agents are unwilling/unable to arrange a permit for me.
I really don't want to go to Nubra on an organised jeep trip with a bunch of other tourists - travel on a local bus being half the fun - so I was wondering if there's anyone out there who is also in the same situation? My dates are flexible but I was hoping to head over there ? Tues next week.

Anne best bet for you would be to hookup with some fellow travelers in Leh, there is a square in Leh's main market with lots of restaurants. Between those restaurants there is a notice board where tourists who are looking for travel partners post their plans, I will try to dig up that places name.
If you can hold on, we'll be up very shortly and need inner line permits.
We are in Delhi at the moment, and have arrive in Leh on the 7th. We had hoped to spend 1month+ in nubra valley, although I have heard that there is a limit of 1week on the permits... Can you bypass the time restrictions? Can the travel agents? I don't fancy popping into Leh every week to update the permits though... any thoughts
IM me if you are interested, as i said we arrive in Leh on fri and may need a day or so to chill and get used to the altitude. If you're already in Nubra, give us shout anyway just for the crack

Thanks - again
Thanks for the replies. I'm still in Leh and haven't made it to Nubra yet due to general laziness and a peculiar devotion to the German Bakery's Plum Pie!
Will check out Tenzing and see if he can sort out my permit. I'm flexible with times/dates and may not have it sorted by the 7th. As far as I know 7 days is the max but what happens if you "overstay" is anybody's guess!

Does anyone know what are the rules regarding Inner Line Permit for POIs (Persons of Indian Origin)? Do they need to apply in a group of four?
I have not been able to get a definitive answer from anyone, even the travel agents in Leh are not clear about this. I need this information for a friend. Thanks.

DaDrifter dont think you need to have a group of four if you are an indian.
Thanks Yogesh. The problem is that POIs do not hold an Indian passport and most do not have any Indian identification papers (except the POI card). Although one doesn't have to show any IDs while travelling in a group, I am not sure the guys manning the checkposts would understand the technicality of a person being of Indian origin, but holding a passport from another country. Even the travel agents in Ladakh are not sure and most suggest that you put your nationality as Indian and give an Indian address.

In that case I would suggest you to put down yourself as the national of the country you hold the passport for.
I am currently in Leh and would like to go to the Nubra valley (and/or even the Zanskar valley). Unfortunately my cellphone doesn't work here but PM me you contact info or come by Shanti guesthouse late afternoon and ask for Christoffer. Even if your not going to Nubra it would be fun to meet some IMers.
See you

Local Bus Update
I'm still in Leh and have put off the Nubra trip for a bit due to the aftereffects of some dodgy panir and some planning to head tomorrow to a lake the name of which I cannot spell.
However I heard a story last night in a restaurant from another tourist which has been confirmed by a travel agent today. Some sort of incident took place yesterday with some foreigh tourists on one of the local buses heading to Nubra which has resulted in the government saying that foreign tourists can only travel to Nubra by jeep. It seems that the local travel agents' association is advising travel agents to organise permits only for travellers booked on jeeps.
There may still be some agents who will arrange permits for bus travellers and it may be worth checking at the bus stand as to whether they will alllow foreigners to buy tickets for the bus.
