homestays in leh

Hey

Does anyone have any experiences of homestays in Ladakh? Can anyone recommend a good company to go through? Do you need to book in advance or is it cool to arrange it when you get there?

I've looked at himalayan-homestays.com and contacted a few there, but the majority seem to ply a one week trekking route where you stay at various homestays along the way... I'm looking for one family to stay with and do small half day walks from there (i'm no trekker!!) but this seems harder to find.

Any input would be much appreciated...

Thanks!

Hi,
My girlfriend and I did this a few months ago and had a fantastic experience. A guy called Jack runs Ladakh Adventure on Fort Road in Leh. His numbers are 01982-255170 and 94193-40555. Make sure you ask for Tsewang Gomboo as your guide. If you can't find Jack, he organises homestays and treks with several companies. His number is 09419269391. Gomboo is from one of the villages you will stay in, he know's everyone in town and is sweet to hang out with, share a joke and some Ladakhi beer, if you can stomach it.

All the best
Michael

Yeah they need one or two days notice, nothing too drastic. Pack warm and take good shoes!

Himalayan-homestays do arrange homestays for more than 1 night. I stayed with a family in Likker for 6 days in June this year.

You should go down to their office at the Khanglhachen Hotel (Snow Leopard Trails) along Fort Road to talk to them.

Good chang is the stuff of religious parables , and the praise of the sixth Dalai Lama.

Bad chang is half way to the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster in side effects..

Homestays is how the guest houses have started : a spare bed or room for a temporary guest. When you come to a small village , like for example for me Hemis Shukpachen this last July , youŽll find maybe one or two regular guesthouses , and meet people who ask if you have a place to stay. The diffrence between the "regular" guesthouse and the homestay is little more than a sign on the outside , and clearing away some stuff on your bed. Sometimes youŽll get a sleeping place by yourself on the mats in the kitchen , next to the low floral motif painted tables , and there is no other room : some Ladakhis still prefer sleeping on the roofs until the winter , something which have started when there was a fireplace and a simple hole in the roof in the kitchen, which gave predictable results.

Knowing even just a few phrases in Ladakhi will give you even better reception where you come - there is a small book called Getting Started in Ladakhi that you can find in Dzomsa and other places in Leh.

If you want a combination of homestays and guided trek , try contacting Thinlas Chorol of the Ladakh Womens Travel Company - she was active in Around Ladakh with Students , that organised small tour groups , guided by ... yes , students.
