Are Indian roads ever safe?

But seriously... Although the roads open at different times in different years, the road from Manali should definitely be clear by late June (the festival is 27-28 June this year, apparently), and possibly much earlier. The road from Srinigar will open even earlier. Flying to Leh is possible year-round.

Just be sure to treat the sudden altitude changes of the trip with appropriate respect, and take it easy!

Beside being a village Hemis is the site of the most prominent monastery in Ladakh where the seat of Drukpa Kargyut sect of tibetan budhism is. In the past the sect was favourised by Namgyals, ladakhi royal family and gained the privileged position in Ladakh. It owned huge wealth, lands etc. in Ladakh. Annual festivals are held in all monasteries (their date is fixed according to tibetan calendar). For tourists who are not tibetologists the festivals would look very much the same - there are shows of tibetan plays, dances, music very pitoresque since all kinds of masks and costumes are applied. The Hemis festival venerate the birthday of guru Padmasambhava. Special attraction of this year festival is the unveiling of giant tanghka image which appear only every 12 years.
