Anyone have any idea for the exact 2004 dates of the festival at Hemis gompa in Ladakh... guidebook says June/July.

Thanks

Hi Maree,

Hemis Festival is on 27th and 28th June this year.
I went last year. It is nice. And busy.
Happy travels!

access to Henis festival

If there is a chance to get to Ladakh in June IŽd like to see the Hemis festival.
Is there free access or do I need an agent or a ticket?

Anyone knows?

Thanks

Hi Phasops,

Getting to Ladakh in June should not be a problem. If it's too early for the passes (due to snow), you can fly (either with Jet Airways, or Indian Air).

As for the Hemis Festival, just get a bus to Hemis. You buy a a ticket at the entrance, from a monk.

Happy travels!

Hi Phacops,

I am not sure. But it will not be so full that you could not get in. There is a lot of space there. I didn't come early last year, I even missed a prat of it, but I had no problem getting in. It is good to get there early though. Or time it so you come during a break. First day is usually more busy.
Yes, there are groups. Mostly of Indian tourists.
If you are really worried, check with the locals in Leh, a couple of days before the Festival. I presume you will arrive few days before. It'll help with the acclimatization.
