Help On ladakh PLZ....Urgent

Hey,
We are a group of 3 students going from delhi to leh..
approximate itinery is...
19th JUNE 2008 leaving from delhi
20th morning we'll reach manali.we'll stay in manali that day...
21st morning we'll leave for leh by road on a 2 day trip by taxi from manali(stopping on the way wherever the taxi guy decides)..*
22nd night we'll b reaching leh i believe...
23,24,25,26 n 27th we plan to stay there...*
27th night or 28th morning we plan to leave back by road to manali...

Q: what all should we do in the 5 days at leh??(we want to do water rafting)(we have very small financial resources so travelling around by taxi is not an option)
Q: what is the best option to stay on way to leh at serchu(i believe the taxi guys stop there for the night), balancing both finances and relative comfort??

Kindly reply asap...

You will get a better response if you do not use abbreviations in your post. They make it very difficult to read and many people will not have the time (or the patience) to try to work out what you mean.

Comfort and Sarchu rarely belong in the same sentence , going up from Manali. You have another thread here today, describing the night in Sarchu , by Roshe :

"We gave our night tooth brushing a skip as the water in the tap was coming directly from a glacier and was so cold that surely are teeth would have been frozen. We jumped into our sleeping bags and tried our best to get comfortable though unsuccessfully. The cold worsened. Our bones were chilled. We slept in fits and starts. My head started pounding after some time. My husband felt claustrophobic in his bag. I concluded high altitude headaches worsen in closed rooms probably due to poorer air circulation. However, keeping the cloth window even a little bit more open brought in more cold."

This was from someone who was wise enough to get an acclimatization stop in Jispa, around 3200.Expect it to be worse , including the freezing part , going faster. Sarchu is at 4253 meters , nearly eight hundred meters higher than Leh : it´s probably the highest camp you´ll ever sleep in. Do yourself a favor and do Sarchu on the return leg instead , you´ll get more out of it. Read up on safe ascent guide lines , and how to tweak the Manali-Leh Highway.

Roshe´s thread : Driving in Thin Air

Nobody helps you as much as the experienced guys on this forum. Do not ignore their advise, particularly about the altitudes and how you handle manali-leh leg of your trip. Risk factors, indeed, are high. Please listen and take care. Himalaya is quite unforgiving, otherwise.

hey raghav
whatever you do, DO NOT..i repeat DO NOT miss going to the magnetic mountain. i have been to Leh as a kid and i can tell you its one of the wierdest things i have seen in my life lol. However you will have to ask a few locals about this place as very few people know about it.
Check out the Ladakh events calender..a lot of monastries have thier annual functions in the summer months. They are well worth a visit. Also Gurudwara Pathar Sahab is quite a place with its history.
I doubt Leh is the best place for white water rafting, although my knowledge on this is not much but i belive Rishikesh and some other parts of Utranchal are more of a place for that.
Do be in touch as i plan to drive down to Leh in the first week of july 2008. Your comments will be helpful.

I too freaked out at Magnetic point last year. However, it seems it is not clear whether this is magnetic phenomenon or an optical illusion.

You can raft in the Zansar River the grades range from 3 to 5. Aug is the right time as the water is warmer... Once you reach Leh talk to a few travel agents to get an idea of cost involved. You could also call this agent called Gyatso of Vajra Voyages at 9906999135 to get an idea of the cost before hand...

jagjot...a day trip to Tso Moriri will be very hetic, suggest you visit Pangong So instead. Also i suggest you reverse July 9 & july 11 plans as you would need the ILP which would take a day. Also this would help in far better acclimatization too.

Inner Line Permit, you would need that to visit restricted areas like Khardung La, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Nubra and Dah Hanu.
