I don't know about hard drive cameras in particular, but my sony DV camcorder kind of lost it from 4500m upwards in Tibet. All footage was over-exposed and in a weird blue-magenta tone (lacking greens and yellows). Back at lower altitude in Nepal, the problem was suddenly gone.

I think all hard drives are rated up to 10,000 feet. That's because their R/W heads ride on a cushion of air. As the air thins with increase in altitude, the possibility of the head crashing into the platter (which spins very very fast) increases.

I´ve seen three portable hard drives jam in Ladakh & Tibet. # 3 has the right explanation.

My camera has a SD Flash Card slot as well. Do you think the Harddrive is completely bypassed when using it?
So i can just use that in High-altitude situations? (i know tech support would probably be able to give a better answer - if they did answer, which they probably wouldn't due to liability, but just wondering if there are any experts lurking) |
