Hanley

Hi all,

My wife and I start a 22 day trip to Leh and Srinagar tomorrow. I've seen photographs taken at a place called Hanley and would like to visit there if I can. Could someone please advise me where exactly Hanley is? A map showing Hanley would be awesome.

Thank you

Welcome to IndiaMike!

Saw a couple of photographs on Indiamike photos section. Looks like an awesome place.

According to the link below (and also caption on one of the pics), Hanley is closed to foreigners and Indians need a permit to enter. Its 8 hr drive from Leh. Still trying to look for it on a map.

searching for "Hanle" instead of "Hanley" provided more results, but no maps.

Thanks Vikas!

Hmmm 'closed to foreigners' doesn't sound good, especially seeing as I am such.

The Readers Digest article you pointed out is great though and I think we will take the time to go to some of the other 'unknown' spots mentioned.

Warm Regards,

Hi,

The following link could be of some help..

http://forum.60kph.com/viewtopic.php?t=384

A few images of Hanle are there in my photo galleries below... and also on the 60kph site.

The "outlook" travellers map of Ladakh is very good and has details. Available for Rs.20 at the Ladakh Tourist Reception centre in Leh.

Another member here : Avinash Zalake had made a compilation of available ones, the thread is here : Some Maps of Ladakh & spitti ( Collected from various sites )

THISis the one i am referring to.

Hope that helps...

Yes, Hanle (pronounced Anle) is definitely off-limits to foreigners, even with an inner-line-permit.

yes its closed to foreigners but there is a rumour that it may be opened next year. i would not advise going off the permitted areas but on the occasions when I have blundered into them by accident i have seen no police army actiity at all, but then i was not in an area that was actually near a border, just off limits
