Festival in ladhak

is there a festival coming up in ladhak on the first week of sept.?
what is this festival? what is the gathering like or is it just a tourist promotion?
anybody been there before? would love join a trip to the place if anybody' s planin.

If it's the same festival that we saw a few years ago, even though it is promoted by the local tourist board, it is well worth a visit. All the villagers come into Leh, the women dressed in their local village costumes which vary from one village to the next. They parade down the main street and nobody minds being photographed. It's one of the most colourful festivals I have ever seen and a photograher's dream. Also the archery contest is not to be missed.

All this as well as Ladakh's stunning natural beauty. You can't lose.

what is the festival all about ? has it been a traditional practice? its just that i have to quit a job to be there perhaps so i just wanted to make sure everything is worth it. how about the cost of staying there, would it be enough to spare for the equipment.

The festival at the beginning of September is called the Ladakh Festival. I am pretty sure that it was started some years ago as a way to expand the short Ladakh tourist season, so it is not truly a traditional festival. The activities that I mentioned are however traditional. Forgot to mention the dances with masks in one of Leh's gompas. For more info try this site

I really can't advise you on whether to give up your job or not. That depends on your circumstances and you will have to make your own decision on this. Can't you take some holiday leave?

Prices for lodging and food are about the same as other places in India though if there are a lot of tourists around they may go up slightly.
