Condition of Tibetan childrens village?

Does anyone know the condition of the Tibetan Childrens Village in Choglomsar? Nearly 1500 kids live there! I am so worried for them.

Thank you all for your kind words. Rigzin, like almost all Ladakhis, was a wonderful person. I have been in touch with Mahabodhi, and the director is sending one of his staff out to see if anything can be found out about whether Rigzin has any surviving family members. I will be donating money to the relief efforts, and if he has any family left, I will direct some of the funds to go to them. I wish that I could do more.

It is interesting, that I had seriously considered taking my seven year old son to Ladakh this summer. If we had gone, it would have been this month...

I've found more info about it all at http://www.visitladakh.com

I just spoke to my friend in Choglomsar village.
The building is slightly damaged. The campus is full of mud now. All Children are safe. They are in the army camps. The Army has also setup camp in one part of the campus where there was less mud. Children are staying in those Army Camps.

As you being senior member, very much familiar with Ladakh, Could you suggest some organization where we can contribute financially to help people in ladakh?....

Mountain_Yogi...

Much as I would like to specifically recommend a few charitable organizations that are engaged in collecting donations for the suffering people in Ladakh, I hadnt mentioned any till now, for obvious reasons...

The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre are the first ones that come to ones mind... But please note, these are just personal thoughts, also mentioned by a few other IMers... The final decision ofcourse lies with the individual... Also, donations are just one means of helping out...

Best wishes...

Hello everyone!

Thanks for your kind words, yesterday was spent coming down from this whole scary week.. Big unwinding happening here! My son called in the middle of the night to tell me that he booked a flight out of Leh on Monday to Delhi.. Phew! It was crazy expensive, 1,200 rupees he said (could have mis-understood there was a long delay and hard to understand him), but i am just relieved he is safe and alive... The ticket is priceless as far as i'm concerned...

When he gets into Delhi and writes me I will share any pertinent info that i hear with all of you..

My heart goes out to all who are suffering from this tragic event...

Thank you all for being here for me during this shaky, crazy week!

Tara

There was no loss of life for the ITBP except for a family which lived somewhere else in the city, they lost two children. Choglamsar brings memories of a muslim baker from whom we purchased kulchas and a punjabi tea shop where we had tea and pakoras.

The Delhi meet was successful - we managed to collect close to 1.4 lakh and quite a lot of blankets and other odds.

Money has been used to procure water and medicines

One supply has already reached the authorities and soon another supply would be on its way.

Lets hope that all the relief reaches the needy before the onset of winter.

Thanks Marius - unfortunately I couldn't attend the meet as I am stationed in Trivandrum ( South India) but yes the Delhi guys did a great job - other regions would also be chipping in during phase 2 praying that it would be as big a success as phase 1 in Delhi was.
