Delhi-Manali-Leh-Srinagar-Delhi Safari : Jul. 11 to Jul 19/20

Hi All

Myself along with my husband have planned to visit Leh during Jul.11 - Jul. 19/20. We will be going on a Four wheel ( Tavera ). Below is the Itinerary:

Jul.11 (04:00) LEAVE DELHI FOR MANALI
(OVERNIGHT STAY AT A HOTEL AT MANALI)

Jul.12 (06:30) LEAVE FOR LEH VIA ROHTANG/SARCHU/KEYLONG
(OVERNIGHT STAYS AT SARCHU/KEYLONG ON Jul. 12 and Jul. 13)
In case, it is possible to have a stop-over only at Keylong and reach Leh on Jul. 13 evening, will prefer that. In that case, Jul. 13 can be considered as a spare day.

Jul.14 REACH LEH
(EXPLORE LEH LOCALLY,River Rafting on River Indus)

Jul.15 (09:00) LEAVE for PANGONG LAKE
(OVERNIGHT STAY AT Tangste/Spangmik)

Jul.16 (08:00) LEAVE for KHARDUNG-LA FROM Tangste/Spangmik
BACK TO LEH FROM KHARDUNG-LA
(OVERNIGHT STAY AT LEH)

Jul.17 (09:00) LEAVE for SRINAGAR Via KARGIL, SONAMARG
(OVERNIGHT STAY AT SRINAGAR)
(WILL EXPLORE GURUDWARA PATHAR SAHIB ON THE WAY)

Jul.18 (09:00 - 13:00) EXPLORE SRINAGAR - SHIKARA AT DAL LAKE

Jul.18 (13:00) LEAVE FOR DELHI Via JAMMU/UDHAMPUR
(OVERNIGHT STAY AT JAMMU)

Jul.19 (07:00) LEAVE FOR DELHI Via NH-1A (JAMMU By-Pass)

Jul. 19 (19:00) REACH DELHI. TAKE REST!!!

Request members to review the above itinerary and comment. The plan should not be too hectic.

Also, right now, we're only 2. We would like to be accompanied with few friends who're interested for above dates. We have vacancy for another 5 people. Since we're taking Tavera, the basic travelling cost will be shared among all travellers. Anyone who is interested can e-mail my husband at vk_95@yahoo.com.

Definitely wiser to skip Sarchu on the way up , esp. when driving yourself & with a single night in Manali. You can go further than Keylong in a single day : I´ve travelled with a clunky bus up to Darcha. Accomm in Darcha is very basic tent dhabas , but some good food. Jispa between Keylong and Darcha offers better accomm , never tried that , though.

My thoughts on the road : Sleepless in Sarchu : Tweaking the Manali-Leh Highway

Hi:
I have travelled in the same way to the same destinations but with a difference that the car was Santro. What I feel it would be quite useful if you go through my blog where I have described every bit of our journey in detail.

Major difference : doing it the other way , no nights above 3500 until after Leh.

Darcha has only a few Dhabas next to the Checkpost
They serve food and also give beds for Rs.50. My last trip, we had to halt at Darcha because of heavy rain. Really didnt like the food thro...

The Hotel at Jispa is decent but too expensive, they have a limited menu and dont even think of breakfast. I did leave a suggestion on guest book but dont think they have even bothered to read.

The only hazard I see is that I know the journey will become too tough and tiredness post Jul. 18. (After overnight halt at Jammu). If I would had an option to fly out of Srinagar , would have taken it up. But we will have our vehicle to take her back to Delhi...

Hi all! We are a family of four travelling to Manali for 10 days from the 1st of July. We are probably not going to see Northern India again anytimes soon. I would like to know if we should:

a) Travel in and around Manali
or
b) Should we see Manali-Leh and Ladakh.

If not this then what could be our other options...

My chidren are 16 and 20 years of age.

Please let me know as soon as possible !
Thank you

Madhu

There are some very real dangers involved in going for a stay in Sarchu , as described by poster # 6 above , both in immediate health effects and regarding your capacity as a driver. See also this thread.
