Delhi Leh Bike Trip Sep-Oct, 09

Hi all,

I have planned a bike trip as follows from 18th sep to 04 oct, 2009.
Delhi --> Chandigarh --> Manali --> Sarchu --> Leh --> Kardungla --> Ladakh --> Kargil --> Srinagar --> Jammu --> Delhi

Somebody already experienced like this can help me to clear some doubts:-
1) I have Honda unicorn 150cc. Is it ok for ride on highest motarable road.
2) What type of preperation is req. (like for bike tyre tubes, oil, clutch wire, oxygen cylinder, warm clothes, sleeping bags)?
3) I hope that the route will be open after one month. Wht do you guys think??
4) We are 3-4 guys. Anybody interested can join us wih this plan.

waiting for your reply guys.

regards,

Hi Deepak,

Your ride plan is good considering the time you have at hand. You'll be able to travel at leisure.

Your bike shall make it to Khardungla, no issues. I am presuming that you wont be loading it like a Ox.

The route will be open in Sept. It usually starts closing up in October.

For the bike, the ideal stuff you've already mentioned. Just ensure that your bike is roadworthy for a good journey. Carry essential spares, puncture kit, foot pump etc.

You'll require warm clothing, but it wont be freezing cold during the day. At night, clothing would depend a lot on where you're going to be

All the best...

The road has recently opened after being out for four days , second time this month. It went out in a spectacular way starting from the 18th last year.Hardly unique.

Night temperatures in Leh right now are +1 degree , count on it being a lot lower everywhere from Darcha to Upshi with the hike in altitude : we had frost at Pang in late June.

Road updates here

Doable but be prepared for extreme cold while riding.

Dont forget thermals, woolen gloves and woolen socks plus scraf and a good warm woolen head gear- A good pair of sunglasses is also essential to beat snow blindness.

Do you guys have experience in High altitude ghat section driving - some of the passes like Tangla La can be quite tricky and dangerous.

Bike wise there should be no issue unless you dont overload it - there would be a lot of stress on your vehicle and at many places you will feel that the bike is hardly crawly even at full throttle ( due to lack of oxygen)

2) What type of preperation is req. (like for bike tyre tubes, oil, clutch wire, oxygen cylinder, warm clothes, sleeping bags)?

all of the above plus a good medical kit which includes Diamox ( Diamox does not remove AMS it can only buy you time to come down to a lower altitude or help point)

Air pump is also a good idea plus working knowledge on basic bike repair - more than oxygen cylinder you would need a decent jerry can for emergency petrol

ensure the bike is thoroughly serviced and engine oils chnaged and chains + brakes tightened

water proof material to cover your stuff and an high altitude cocoon sleeping bag.

ask the guru Yogesh Sarkar on his tips from a bike centric point of view

3) I hope that the route will be open after one month. Wht do you guys think??

its tricky but it should be okay during that time don't keep it towards the end of October.

Ps : Dont freak out if it suddenly starts hailing while on a pass - drive more slower and more carefully.
And don't attempt any pass if you don't reach the base by 4 pm to 4.30 pm max
