Darcha, Padum, Lamayuru oct.04.

Hello everybody everywhere

I´d like to do the Darcha Padum Lamayuru trek starting somewhere around the 12th of october 2004.

- Are there people (groups) around then with (about) the same ideas, i could hook up to? (I´m not stuck only to this plan, but i´d really like to go to Zanskar at least, i´m not in a hurry either)

One other question, since there´s a big chance, due to fresh snow, that the southern passes (Shingo La, Phitse La) are closed ; Is there a path going north from Takh via Phugtal Gompa to enter Zanskar?? (maybe a path following the Tsarap river.... Avid, do you know???).
Or, with snow on those passes, will the road from Darcha to Takh also be closed then???

- I hear stories of locals in padum in winter not wanting to sell food, simply because they need it for their own (families). Sounds logic to me. Is this true or should it be no problem to buy food and vegetables in Padum at the end of october??

Your reply highly appreciated.

Co de bosko

ps. Did trekking at Stok (Ladakh), Annapurna Circuit & Helambu (both Nepal). The three of them all ´too´ late in season, but never encountered fresh snow (of any meaning) on the treks. I presume that heavy snow mostly waits untill january/february (?)

I stayed december-january in Ladakh many years ago : Based on that I wouldn`t expect little heavy snow beyond Zanskar in january (and I was looking for it). Had a nice ski trip to Changspa via the bazar road when I moved, though (calling myself "njumba goser" out loud - best to be first) .

Hi Vistet

Did you do more skiing in India. I hear Auli should be quite nice (but wonder what equipment they rent over there...)

co de bosko, you are gambling here with the weather. Since the region is "trans-Himalaya" meaning "Rain Shadow" the general incidence of precipitation is rather low. But the Global Climate is changing. You cannot be sure that you will not encounter freshly fallen snow.

Be completely prepared for ice and snow (crampons, ice axe, ice screw, ropes, etc.) and hope that you never have to use them. Food is an iffy business so late in the season. Buy it from Manali for the entire journey for yourself plus your guide/porter. You will get proper guides from Manali. Its quite possible if you do it rationally with full logistical support. If you are looking to cut corners... I would say its your life you are looking at. I would not risk my life for an inadequately organized low budget trek. My life is more important than that.

I'm flying Delhi on the 30th of september. Finally after 4 years i will be able to go to India again. Love the country.
I'm still looking for people to join on the Darcha-padum-Lamayuru trek.
In contrary to my first message I think to start this trek around the 7th of October (instead of the 12th...).
Well maybe i'll meet some people in Manali or Keylong, or maybe i'll find a porter/guide to guide me over the Shingo La and Singge La.
Anybody with good tips for this trek please let me know. I'm also looking for a diary about this trekking on the net....
Thanx

Manali is your best bet. Both for finding trekking partners AND for arranging guides/porters.

ALL the BEST and HAPPY TREKKING!

Co de Bosko:
While in Delhi or in Manali you can call up my friends in Manali:
Vijay and his brother Dorjee at
01902-259192 (home)
09418059192 (mobile)
They would be able to help you with group/trekking partner for this.
But I agree with Avid, that the this is not the best time for this trek and you may not find many takers for this.
Drop me a PM if you want me to contact my friends in Manali to get more information, gather info about fellow trekers/group and maybe pre-arrange for the trek.
