Camping Safe? Where to Camp?

Hi,

Can we take our own camping gear and just pitch our tent in suitable places?

I am wondering how safe it is?

Are there any recommended camp sites in and around Leh/Zanskar?

What do you guys recommend?

I trekked through Zanskar last year. We camped wherever it was suitable, but everywhere someone from the nearest village came to collect a camping fee. That's how it works.
