Best way to Travel in Leh

Hi,

I am plaing to visit Leh and go to Padum, Pangong Tso or TsoMoriri and finaly from padum to Srinagar via Kargil. or Leh TO chilling?

How much does private Taxi cost? Do they charge per day ro how do they calculate fare?

Is shared cab a too much trouble or time consuming to arrange?

How can I move around without conveniently without drilling a BIG Hole in my wallet?

Thanks!

Private Taxis in Leh charge on destination basis & not on per day basis. The charges are fixed for all the places. You can find shared taxis to most of the tourist places in Ladakh by contacting travel operators in Leh. For that you will need to keep your travel schedule flexible.

Just to give you an idea about the prices Leh - Pangong Tso - Leh , single day return trip cost Rs 5000 in 2008.

So the price would remain same if I wanted to stay the night at PangongTso and not return the same night?

The price will be more if you want to stay a night. I think 1000 or 1500 Rs. extra.

cool! I guess sharing a cab with like minded couples is the best...

Are the buses too slow or very difficult to find?

Also, can we just drop in at PangonTso and find a place to stay? how does it work?

the taxi rate for 2009 to Pangong Tso is around 6100 Rs.

accomodation is available at Lukung (at the tip of the lake) or Spangmik (further down). its the peak season now so you won't be able to bargain too much for prices.

There are public buses that ply the route from Leh - Spangmik but havent personally taken it.

Kinetic Honda

Would anyone recommend hiring a Kinetic Honda? Will it be able to stand the test of the terrain.

Can you actually hire something like a Kinetic Honda once in Leh?

I would love to drive around the town and visit nearby places in it

Thanks Gopi. Do you think in the low oxygen climate the Kinetic Hondas will be able to run at all?

Also, do you recommend hiring a bike in November?
