Hi folks. I am making my trip to leh for d first time this august for a photography and research of my thesis titled " culture and heritage, ladakh".
I am travelling single and will reach leh via manali by a jeep/bus.
I want to hire a bike in Leh for a week for sigh seeing in leh and for riding to places like Pangong Tso, tso mirrori, nubra valley and other places. I need the bike for the ample freedom its provide in terms of stopping in way for clicking photographs and visiting remote villages which is on my agenda.
Pls guide me as, ARE BIKES AVAILABLE ON RENT IN LEH??
HOW MUCH IS D APPROXIMATE RENT AND SECURITY FOR THE BIKE??
WHO IS TRUSTABLE AND KNOWN BIKE RENTER IN TOWN??
HOW ARE THE ROAD CONDITIONS ON ROAD TO PANGONG, TISOMIRORI AND NUBRA VALEEY??, NOTE:I AM NOT ACCUSTOMED TO RIDE BIKES IN HILLS AS I HAVE NEVER DONE IT BEFORE BUT I DO RIDE BIKES IN CITIES LIKE DELHI:
I HAVE THIS CONFIDENCE THAT I'LL B ABLE TO HANDLE BIKES ON HILLS :-)
AND IF I CAN FIND ANY OF THE EXPERIENCED GUYS WHO R MAKING DERE TRIP TO ALL THE ABOVE PLACES FROM LEH, I'LL CONSIDER MYSELF VERY FORTUNATE TO STICK WID DEM FOR GUIDANE AND SAFETY:-)

PLS HELP : S O S

Rohit motorcycles are available for rent in Leh, one of my friends was there last year and he rented a pulsar 180 and a pulsar 150. If you havenít done any riding in hills and have no experience in touring, then its best to stay away from motorcycles at that altitude and terrain.

Hi Rohit,

There are a lot of bike renting shops available in Leh. But, the main question is which bike do u want to ride. Mostly, the bikes that are available are Enfields and the Yamaha Rx series bikes. You will find even Pulsar 150/180 and the RD350 too. If you don't really have a good hand experience of Enfields/Yamaha 2-stroke bikes and don't have inside-out knowledge of these bikes, then it would be suicidal to hire them because they are very prone to develop some mechanical problem (and most of these bikes are in very poor condition too).

In this case, the best bet would be a Pulsar 150/180; they have decent amount of power to take you anywhere in that region. One more advantange of the Pulsars is the bigger fuel tank (18.5 L approx.) that would give you a long range or riding per tankful of bike (at least 725-750 km per tankful even in worst case).

Whatever bike you are hiring, just make sure it's in good condition and then ride the bike within its limits, and you'll be a happy man at the end of the day .

All the best.

Hi yogesh, checked all your posts and pics. I must say I envy your accomplishments
I have never driven my bike more then 120 kms at a strech and never been to the hills on it but I have this strange feeling that once I am out there I'll manage out there. I know I am not being practical so can you give me some pointers as to what problems a biker usually face at that terrain and altitude. Thanks for your reply ... rohit

Rohit I understand how you feel, but when you are in trouble the only thing that comes to your rescue is your experience. Experience is some thing that can not be replaced by any thing else and only way to get experience is to go out there and do it. But in a safe manner, try and do few small trips first and then go for the big one. Here is a motorcycle touring guide that I wrote a while back http://www.yogeshsarkar.com/articles...ring_guide.htm

Thanks citybell and sunil for your replies ...
I have driven enfields before but not at that terrain and altitude. I guess pulsar 150/180 suits me fine as a beginner or starter ... do you have any aproximate idea about the price or the rent for the pulsar in leh ?? Also about the amount that they ask as security so that i can keep that much cash at my disposal. or if you can provide me with the contact numbers of anybody who can give me this info..
thanks once again ... cheers .. rohit
