From what I can see you actually get a lot more : reporting day , rest day and acclimatisation days totals four nights. Counting nights is more relevant since your oxygen saturation go down when you sleep , which speeds up the process.

You are also actually going down at first , I´m not good at thinking in feet but Nimmu is about four hundred meters lower than Leh , i.e. 3100 meters. Lamayuru is somewhat higher than Leh , no problem.Comm & transport : you are travelling on or near the highway , and there are telephones that seem to work often .

The acclimatisation scheme here is very sound , after the three first nights most people have a fundamental shift in breathing regulation , that means that the body works as most thinks is normal : breathing is regulated by the amount of oxygen in your blood. This allows you to breathe deeper , more efficiently.

Sleeping at 4000 plus is definitely something that should be undertaken with care , see for example this article from Gosainkund , same altitude as Hemkund or Sarchu. Apart from the dramatic stuff , you don´t want nausea or impaired balance when biking on mountain roads.

.. and a well-padded wallet IŽd say : in 2005 the price asked for one hour made me walk away. I walked out instead , over the Diggar La.

Another option would be to rent a bike , load it up on the bus , and jump off at the Khardung La . Just check the brakes before the bus ride...

Ah, brilliant. It's full grown now (assuming it's the same one), very tolerant of people grabbing it and whatnot, and the monk told me that he has no idea what it eats - apparently it's never touched any meat put before it.

Maybe Bila-le ( "the honorable cat" ) is an reincarnation of .. Fifi Greywhiskers , who telephatically dictated his memoirs to T. Lobsang Rampa ?

Bila is cat in Ladakhi , and -le is a honorific : the way you address an elder or high lama. Ladakhis finds this a good joke (one that they probably won't repeat themselves) .

Never met the cat in question ( or Cyril Hoskins), didn't go to Lamayuru last time.
