Cant give you a proper itinerary..depends largely on how many days you are planning to be in ladakh..

If you have like a week..you can do pangong lake from leh..its a day trip..in case you want to spend a night there..there are options for that as well

Nubra valley requires 2 days..you can stay in the village of diskit..or hunder..several guesthouses there...nubra valley is unbelievably beautiful

Hi,
I am planning a trip to Leh during late September (Set 26-Oct 4). I will be reaching Srinagar on Sept 26 evening and am planning to spend the next day (Sunday) and night in Srinagar and start to Leh on Monday early morning. My focus in on Leh and hence want to spend as much time there. If i start on Monday morning from Srinagar, what time will I reach Leh if I hire a taxi? Is it safe to start from Srinagar late in evening and travel all night towards Leh? I am guessing I will have all of Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Leh before I start to Delhi by flight on Sunday morning. Will 4 days provide me time to visit important places around Leh? Since I am traveling by road, will I need 2 days in Leh to get acclimatised?

Sorry for so many questions, this is my first trip to Leh as well as Srinagar

Thanks in advance,

regards,
Ram

I'm planning to travel from Mumbai - Delhi - Manali - Leh around late Aug or early Sept for a 2-3 week trip to Leh. I plan to trek/camp and river raft in Leh. Pls check out Red Chilli Adventure - I have used them in the past and find them very professional and competent. Please let me know if you are planning to travel to Leh around the same time.

Delhi to Leh

I am arriving in Delhi (for my first trip to India) on the night of July 21st and around the 25th I will travel to Leh. Still trying to decide if I will fly or travel overland. Would like to hook up with someone who is also is traveling overland. I fly out of Leh on Aug 13th.

clothing?

hi, this is my first post on here - i love it! so much excellent information...

i've taken in a lot of what everyone is saying about the roads, acclimatising, etc.. but i was wondering if i would be in need of a winter down jacket in leh in mid august? or is it just really unpridictable?

i do like it warmer than colder, but would an extra couple of cardigans do the trick??

thanks, i'm so excited

Late night , or possibly morning : the more you travel on these roads the more you learn that you can´t get a more specific answer than that.

Acclimatization is practically all about nights, when you lie down your oxygen saturation drops an extra notch and pushes your body in to acclimatization response. There is little to no difference in flying in or making a nonstop run Srinagar- Leh. Either way the first basic step in acclimatization will take minimum the first threee nights, but the first is the major hurdle : you won´t get an extra day in effective time by skipping the night in Kargil. You´ll also miss out on coming out in to the Indus valley and a lot more.

I slept with an open window a few weeks back in Leh , it won´t be a major difference in August. Mornings and evenings can be colder than you expect though, and circulation in hands & feet is poorer the first week. A thin balaclava is nice to sleep in , and my favorite apparel is knee length silk stockings , rolls down to your ankles with with one tug after the sun has come out. Ladakhi & Tibetan shirts and jackets ( in the non-Western adapted version ) are very practical with sleeves longer than your arms , working as mittens as well. I picked up some wool cloth and had one made in delhi for Rs 200 before going up this time.

Thanks Vistet.
After reading a little more about the place, roads and travel time, I am planning to stay in Sonamarg one night and start next day early morning and hopefully reach lamayaru but evening. Will it be a strech? If the above plan is ok, then start from Lamayaru next day and reach Leh by evening? I will be left with 3 full days at Leh and am guessing will have time to visit 2-3 places nearby. Please advice.

Thanks in advance,

regards,
Ram

Anyone know which the better/quicker way to get from Leh to Delhi by land is - bus to Manali and then to Delhi, or bus to Srinagar and then (train? bus?) to Delhi? And what are the times/fares/other pros-cons like?

I'm sorry, I'm being lazy, could probably piece it together but a readymade answer would be easier, heh.

Looong time since I did this , but going via Srinagar should be a three parter : Leh-Srinagar , Srinagar-Jammu by road , Jammu-Delhi by train.

You can take either the two day bus/"jeep"/mini-bus Leh-Manali or the cannonball run straight to Manali, and then overnight bus to Delhi.

HRTC bus : Rs 460 + 109 to Manali
HPTDC bus : Rs 1600 incl. accomm & breakfast in Keylong
Good seats in the jeeps around Rs 1500

Manali-Delhi Rs 800-900 on Volvo buses , and downwards.

The day they finish the train connection , and stop lobbing grenades, to Srinagar choices will be a lot bettter.

Thanks a lot, vistet. Any idea what the timings/duration of the Leh-Srinagar buses are like?
