Accommodation and other logistics

Hi,

I will be in Leh from 19th of Sept till the the morning of the 25th. Will be gone on a couple of overnight sight seeing trips perhaps.. My questions are,

1.Do I book a guest house (there are many recommendations here) from here on the phone or should I just shop around once I get there on the 19th. If yes, then where should I go from the airport and what should I tell the cab driver? Are these guest houses pretty close by to walk and inquire around?
2.Would it be difficult to find a place during that time?
3.If I want to do an overnight jeep safari, should I book that hotel or gues house up front or whoever would arrange it woud arrange for my overnight stay as well?
4.Do guesthouses arrange the necessary permits too? I would hate not to be abe to go places and do things just because I didn't book things in advance and that happened to me in Sikim.

Appreciate your time.

Hi

1. You can do a quick visit to few nearby houses. Where to go?? I would suggest you go to Fort Road, and hunt a near by places.
2. All the guys will be there to hunt you.
3. Ask the Hotel guy and also talk to at least two travel agents for a deal. Permit should be done the first day u are in Leh.
4. Most Hotels will but for small u=guest house will ask a travel agent to do it for them. Ask them and it should be arranged.

Happy travelling.

Hi,

we have been to Leh last month and we stayed at Yasmin Guest house, which is very nice, close to the main road but quit. Around Yasmin there are plenty of other nice guest houses too. We have been there in August, which is high season and did not need to book in advance. We arranged all our trips through the guest house, which was higly satisfactory. We did not book in advance for overnight stays. The taxi driver knew the accomodation and drove us there. We stayed overnight in Lamayuru and in Diskit (Nubra Valley) in cheap guest houses. If you want to stay in a hotel (there is only one in this places) you should call in advance. They were all booked out.

Hi
Not really a prepaid but the Taxi in Leh is properly conducted thru the union. So you will know exactly what to pay before you board.
there will be plenty of taxi and a guy from the union will tell u which one to board and let u know the price. and pay directly to the driver at the end of the journey.

Late to the party I see

anyways its always a good idea to hunt around once you reach Leh, provided you dont reach towards nightfall or you are not bogged down with heavy baggage - in which cases its better to prebook with some decent guest houses like Oriental Guest house etc.....these kinds of guest houses have a steady rate unless you are arriving in a real off season.
