Unhappy Snow in Manali in Sep

Hi,
Am a new member to this forum. We have planned a trip to Manali and Shimla by the 18th of Sep(3 days in Manali and 2 days in Shimla). As for many, my main intention of going to manali is Rohtang pass - the snow. I have a 4 yr old kid who is waiting to play in snow. All my travel arrangements are done and i was shocked today to hear from a friend that in Manali snow starts only by Oct end. I remember reading from other posts that in Rohtang there is snow all thro the year.
Please guide me,if i do not find snow in Rohtang, where else can we drive further to touch & feel snow. Is it possible to find some place near Manali or Shimla where we can feel the snow and play with it?How is the weather in Rothang this year? any possibilities of early snow fall?
Please give your suggestions asap so that if required we will postpone our trip (though am not much for it).
Thanks
Ranjini

I have my doubts that in September there will be snow at the Rohtang Pass.

Unhappy Thanks for the update

Thanks for replying to my query. But yesterday when i spoke to a travel agent in Manali he told me we can go by horse to some place above Rohtang and we can find plenty of snow there. Is that true? Is there any such place other than Rohtang(probably travelling an extra hour or so) where we can find snow? Am really dissapointed coz i was v eager to see and feel snow and now to know its all gonna be a flop i feel really bad
Your response would be really helpful. Thanks

Anything that a travel agent says I will take it with a pinch of salt. But that is just me.

If you are so fond of snow...why dont you go in winter time?....Jan-Feb months will give you snow even at the lower reaches and you will not need/nor you can climb up Rohtang which will be blocked by snow. Reschdule it and go in winter.

which place he told you.if you have forgotten name ask him again specifically.i wont advise very high places for snow with small kid in sept.finding snow is different and watching and playing during snowfall is different.even if you reach snowline in summer some how ignoring AMS it would be slippery, dirty and hardened.

Unhappy You won't get Snow there.

I'm sorry to tell you, that you wont find Snow at that time - Sep End

Actually we'd been there last year in Aug-Sep (1st week) for 6-7 Days in Manali & we were also searching for Snow... But could'nt find it... Even after moving some 3-3.5 kms from Rohtang by Pony, but got Dissappointment. Also the Pony Track at Rohtang Jungle was very Slippery & Risky... It's NEVER RECOMMENDED for carrying a Small kid with u & going to that Track.

Just on the way to Rohtang we found a Waterfall & people were shooting over there with some very little Old Traces of Snow- Its the Rani Nala. We also took pictures at that Site... But could not get Snow !!!

What is your Tentative Itenerary for Manali Tour ??

Hi,
My plan is like this.
17th - Bangalore to delhi by flight. Catch evening Volvo to Manali
18th - reach Manali and stay in Manali till 20th
20th night start to Shimla..21st full day relax in room or some local sight seeing in Shimla...
22nd evening catch the Shivalik express to Kalka
22nd night Kalka to delhi by train
23rd noon Delhi to Bangalore by flight.

How does this sound?
Any modifications suggested? I have booked all train tickets & Air tickets & accomodation also.
How much will it cost for a local trip to Rohtang and Solang for a day? Which is the best mode of travel? Please suggest
Also please suggest some interesting places to see in Manali

Snow at Rohtang melts by mid of june or beginning of July. Chance of finding snow in Sep is very rare. Going high up from Rohtang with a little kid is not recomended due to AMS and low oxygen level.

Kunzam Pass, 110 Kms from Manali, at a height of 4560 Mtrs will have snow if not fresh. Do a night stay at Losar, which is around 20 Kms before the pass on Manali-Kaza road. But route is narrow, very steap and scary and not recomended in rains.
