Hi,
I'm looking to take the long way from Shimla to Manali, along the Hindustan-Tibet highway, through Spiti. What's the earliest in the season that this can generally be done? I'm looking to do it in Mid May, and take 2-3 weeks, using public transport, and I'm not that interested the trekking. is this a feasible idea? Thanks! |

You'll get thru to Kaza, but from there to Manali no guarantee that Kunzum La/Rohtang La will be open.
You'll have to watch the news closely. |

Rohtang Pass is opened by Army Bullozers around last week of May.
No such dozing for Kunzum La. It opens around 10 June. Postpone your trip. Its a really scenic route. Since you ARE using public transport, AND time does not hassle you... this is what can be done if you want to do it in earlier May... Take a bus or share jeep from Kaza to Losar. Walk across the Kunzum La. Take another bus from the bottom of Kunzum La to wherever. Reach Rohtang Base. Walk across Rohtang. You will get a lot of tourist vehicles on the top to Manali.

I did this circuit in July last year,May is very difficult as the road from Losar and Gramphoo is not metalled and is very narrow in stretches,I have never seen Kunzum pass opening before June so may is out of question.

Thanks for all the solid replies!
Balvar, are there any small, non-touristy, out of the way villages that you would especially recommend along the route? A general question I know, but I'd be interested in your experiences. I'll be arriving in Chandigarh around May 15 and I think I'll just set out then and go slow. If I get caught up somewhere, I don't really care, I could use a week or two of relaxing, doing nothing in the mountains. |

Dear Lansell.
If ur coming to Chd arnd 15th May, Stay in Chandigarh for a day or two. Shimla would be full of toursits. So i wud recommend that on your way to Spiti. u give a week or Ten Days to Kinnaur. In Kinnaur Sangla Valley is a must. With three Main Villages (i.e Sangla, Chitkul, & Batesri) Then Further towards Spiti u can stay in Peo & Kalpa. Spillow is also a laid back Village, Then enjoy the Confluence of spiti & Satluj Rivers at Khab, Stay at Nako Village, its has a lake & a Monastery As well. Then in Spiti u can stay at hurling, Put up in Dhankar Village ( enjoy the Famous Monastery, Hike for Dhankar Lake) & Dhankar Fort is also there. Must see in Spiti Also Spend some time in PIN Valley, Kuring Gompa (known for its Tantric Cult) & Mud Village & Mikkin Villages are there. there is a wildfile Sancatury in PIN Valley. then in Kaza u can spend Time. Enjoy Kye Gompa & Kibber4 Gompa. Rest otherwise Spiti is so munch Fun u can spend enough time over there & in the meanwhile by 10th June Kunzam LA would be open. Also try out Chander Tal Lake (Awesome Moon Lake. For any further queries get back to me Also Enjoy ur Trip !! Quote:
