| Manali to McLeod Ganj Can someone advise on: (1) general road conditions from Manali to McLeod Ganj for late March/early April (2) how long this drive might take (car transfer) (3) anything I should know about -- high passes, etc? Thank you!

| By tourist bus (boring but comfy) around 8hrs by local bus (exciting but uncomfy 9-10hrs. I wouldn't recommend car/taxi travel in the Himalayas unless by jeep. You could break the journey up by spending a day or two in Mandi &/or Rewalsar Lake another quieter Buddhist town KK |

| Hey parker...it is an 8 hour ride from Manali to Mcleodgunj through Mandi. However, as Kullukid has rightly pointed out, it would be sensible if you can stop at Rewalsar for a day. It is some 30 km from Mandi in the hills and it has got a lake with a buddist monastry and it is very peaceful. Worh a visit. |

We meet again... The route from Manali to Mandi (110kms) would be as follows Manali - Kalath - Patlikhul - Katrain - Kullu - Bhuntar - Bajaura - Aut - Pandoh - Mandi. From Mandi, McLeod Ganj is about 110 kms ahead. Things begin to get interesting as you would be passing through some amazing locales and some famous towns. Mandi - Bijni - Drang - Paddar - Urla - Joginder Nagar - Baijnath - Palampur - Dadh - Yol Cantonment - Lower Dharamshala - Mcleodganj If you leave early morning from Manali (6 AM), you should be in McLeod Ganj by 4 in the evening. There are no high altitude passes.. actually, no passes at all to be crossed. | |

| Thank you! Bikerdude: you are right again! My agents in Delhi have revised the Himachel Pradesh itinerary to skip Keylong as the Rohtang and Kunzum Passes are closed until mid-May. I am doing some backtracking (extra night in Shimla), but 99% of my 20 day itinerary remains intact. Thank you very much for bringing this to my attention as it very likely prevented a huge problem while enroute. All the best to you, and the other IM'ers who have helped me out. I hope to submit a trip report when I return. |
