Leh-Tso Moriri-Manali???
Hello:
I am interested in flying to Leh, visiting Tso Moriri, and then heading to Spiti and Kinnaur. If anyone has done this route, please let me know. Here are my questions: 1) Besides Jet Airways, who else flies to Leh? What is the best place to purchase a ticket in Dehli? I would like to leave Dehli as soon as possible but not purchase a ticket beforehand. If anyone has any advice on purchasing my ticket in Dehli- quickly- to get up to Leh, please let me know. Hopefully I won't have to take the road there as I would prefer to do the road only one way- stopping off in Tso Moriri on the way south. 2) Transportation to Tso Moriri is usually via jeep on a tour, correct? Is it best to do the tour and head back to Leh or is it possible to break off after Tso Moriri and head to Manali? Will it be easy to find people going Leh-Tso Moriri-Manali? My main issue is that I don't know how I can get from Tso Moriri to Manali as you usually go to Tso Moriri as part of a tour. What is the route to Tso Moriri- does it go through an area on the main road (Sarchu?) where I can easily get to Keylong and then Spiti and Kinnaur? I would prefer not to backtrack all the way to Leh but don't know the route to Tso Moriri. 3) Is the best place to get transportation to Kaza from Manali? Should I head from Tso Moriri to Manali and then head to Kaza? Any other advice or links on this route would be appreciated. Thanks. Also: I have time to go to either the Nubra valley or Tso Moriri. Am I making the right choice????? |

It is possible to hire a jeep from Leh to manali and do Tso Moriri on the way, however charges might turn out to be higher then usual and sharing with others may of difficult to organise. Personally if time is constrained I will rather go by road to leh and fly out because acclimatization may ground you for good 2 days anyway when you touch down leh by air.
Instead you can try to go by road and acclimatize on the way. Start with Kinnaur and reach kaylong via kaza… then you can go south to manali or head north to leh visiting Tso moriri on the way and fly out from leh (though you will have to arrange with your tour operator for so that he can arrange for permit to visit tso moriri and the same can be given to you in kaylong because the issuing office is in Leh only) |

Leh- Tso Moriri - Kaza
Beside Jet there are Indian Airlines flights to Leh. You can get tickets in Jet or IA offices in Delhi but the problem is that flights are booked in advance therefore you should book the seat long before the departure.
You can travel directly Leh - Tso Moriri - Manali (or even Leh - Tso Moriri - Kaza) by going to Tso Moriri via Mahe Bridge (Indus Valley) and get back to the Leh - Manali road via Tso Kar. Instead of going to Manali you can turn for Kaza at Gramphu. But it is expensive as you can see from the pricelist. I believe not many people travel whole the way to Manali via Tso Moriri. Hippie gave you a good advice - maybe it is better to do the tour opposite way i.e. travel from Shimla via Kinnaur to Kaza then continue to Leh, do the circular tour to Tso Moriri and fly out. |
