Hi,

I may be doing this journey in 3rd week of September. I plan to start from Kaza and descend at Batal. Then trek to Chandratal and then back to Manali. Here is my tentative iterinary:

D-1:- Take the bus to Batal from Kaza.
D-2:- Batal - ChandraTal
D-3:- ChandraTal to Batal and then take a bus to Manali.

I need the following info.
What time does the bus starts from Kaza?
How much time does it takes to reach Batal?
Is the bus too jerky. Can i have a shared jeep for the same route??
What time the bus leaves from Batal to Manali. Is it too crowded??
Do we have a decent shack to stay in Batal?

Thanks,
Jyoti

My response is based on my trip to spiti in July 2002, so things might have changed a bit by now. There was only one bus service between kaza and manali. Starts at 9 am. Takes around 4/5hours to reach batal. The road is mostly bad and of course jerky. If u catch the bus at batal if might be difficult to get a seat, as the bus is generally crowded. Shared jeeps are available and not sure about batal but there is a guesthouse at chotadara and it is generally heavily booked by PWD people.

I shall be visiting spiti again in 1st week of September.

Happy journey.

did this last year.
The bus to Manali starts at 6AM from Kaza and should reach Batal by 12 noon or 1PM. The road till batal is fine. you can reserve your seat in the bus at kaza a day before departure. otherwise there are plenty of shared Sumo/Qualis available from kaza near busstand. They start a little after the bus departs.
Batal has 2 restaurants(dhabba) and you can stay at these places at night.
During the season, there is a shop which is set up at Chandratal too and I'm not sure but you can stay there too. Best is to ask the Dhaba guy at Batal. The guy who runs this shop at Chandratal is ram singh or gyan singh. Forgot the name anyway it doesn't matter.
Before leaving Kaza, its worthwhile to enquire with the travel agents about any group going to Chnadratal from Kaza, you can join them and just pay for the drop till chandratal. many groups just 'visit' chandratal on the way back to Manali.
If Life is a journey....travel on...and on..on..on.....

Will be able to answer ur question regarding availability of sumo and per/person charge in a better way when I return from Spiti shortly. However what I can tell u now is that no vehicle can reach right up to Chandratal Lake, as is possible in case of Pangong Lake in ladhak. There are two routes to reach chandratal. First route starts from the kunzum top it is said to be more scenic and adventurous and of course longer one (8km of walking). The second route starts from batal and is 7.5 km in length; the important part of this route is that it is motorable up to 6km, so u need to walk remaining 1.5 KM. However to best of my knowledge regular manali ľkaza sumos do not enter the road and u need to get down at batal and find ur own way. No sure at this point whether there is any local transport available for this 6 km, it was not when I last visited this place in July 2002.

Last year the shared Sumo/qualis were charging Rs400 for Manali to kaza or kaza to manali for a seat.
Yes you can get the bus from batal to go back to Manali but you need to be in time at batal when the only bus in a day arrives at batal to go to manali. They usually stop at Batal for lunch/snacks/tea etc. You can also get shared jeep from batal if they have a seat available.
Jeeps now can go very close to Chandratal, almost all the way to the camp site near Chandratal. You can get a jeep to drop you at Chandratal but provided all the people in the jeep wants go via Chandratal. No jeep guy will take a diversion just to drop you at Chandratal.

Yes you can hire jeep from Kaza to go around. Shared jeep for local sight seeing is better organised if you are in a group otherwise its mostly you've to hire the entire jeep. Last year, I used the hired jeep for 2-3 days. Day 1 was: kaza- Ki- Komic-lanza-Kaza and I paid Rs1500 for this. day2: Kaza- Dhankar-LahLung-Tabo-Pinvalley(Kungri Gompa and Sagnam) Night stay at Sagnam village and day3:next day back to Kaza. For this I paid Rs2300. These rates are on the lower side as I knew the driver so add extra 300-400 to it.
After that I used local bus to move around Spiti. I would recommend hiring jeep for local sighseeing from Kaza and not from Manali. Hiring from manali would end being on the expensive side. You can comfortably move around in Spiti on local buses and shared jeeps. You have daily bus to Tabo and Mudh(Pin Valley) and they are cheap and great to have an experiencing the local life. You also have a daily bus to Kibber in the evening.
or you can also go out of the bus stand and stand on the road and you can easily hitch hike in that region. After these first 3 days I was in Spiti for 10 days more and I was either hitchhiking or taking the local bus and I enjoyed that more than the hired jeep rides.

day 3: catching bus/shared jeep from manali reaching kaza in the afternoon, check in the hotel relaxed evening.

day 4: kibber-ki monastry, comic village, pin valley national forest. back in the night to kaza.

day 5: langza, dhankar, tabo, back in the kaza at night.

I really would want to add few more days if you can.
Here is what I think would be great:
Day1: Delhi-manali.
day2: Manali and book your jeep for Kaza by evening.
Day3: Kaza and relax. I stayed in Kaza but didn't like it much so next day, I moved to a hotel called 'Spiti Sarai'just outside kaza near Rangrik village, it is not expensive at the same time have great breakfast, open and great views of the surrounding.
Day4: Lanza-Dhankar-Tabo and Pin Valley. best if you can get accomodation at Kungri Gompa for the night.
Day5: Next day do the Pin valley national forest and back to kaza for lunch. After lunch go to Ki and kibber. Night stay at Kibber. Hotel Rainbow and Norling both are good.
day6: Trek to Gatte village and if you can beyond that, amazing yet easy trek. Stay the night at Kibber and pre-arrange your pick-up in the early morning to go to Chandratal and Manali.
Day7: to Chandratal and Manali. (if possible see if you can arrange to camp for a night at Chandratal)
day 8: Manali to Delhi.

thnx vinay. i wish we would be abled do the trip as u mentioned but time and budget are the real hindrance, lets see how far we cud do according to u. also i guess for this we have to hire a jeep from kaza perday(2000/-) or what? as we were planning before kaza as base camp, from there going to near by places and come back at night to kaza for night stay. so u r suggesting to stay at different places.

also another question sangla-kalpa is better than this trip. i like both greenary and rugged mountain. if u had to choose between sangla-kalpa and kaza-tabo which side u wud have chosen?
