Hi members,
I wanted to travel from Delhi to Manali on the 1st of May (Arriving in Delhi previous night) with my wife.I was not sure whether to book the HPTDC Volvo or the HTRC Volvo or any other private operators.

I found that the HPTDC and HRTC volvo costs about Rs.1200 for one person for Delhi-Manali.But I found quite a lot of private operators on "http://www.redbus.in/" where the ticket prices range from 600-900.
Also, most of the front seats in the HPTDC and HRTC volvo buses are already booked. And since the journey is quite long, would have preferred seats in the front rows.
Most importantly, since I would be travelling with my wife , I want to avoid any hick-ups and dont mind shelling out a bit more money.
With all these considerations, could the members please suggest the ideal bus to book for Manali. And would the HPTDC and HRTC be introducing additional buses for any day or is it only one bus daily.
Regards,
Sudeep

Hello Sudeep,

If you want no hicups go with HPTDC / HRTC Volvo - they leave on time and are comfortable and safe.

We travelled Delhi Manali by HPTDC volvo 5 years ago and got the last three seats so you can imagine.. it was a little uncomfortable in the sense that the seats would not recline completely but we were okay.

Go for the middle seats thats fine too.

All the best
Mani

In HRTC Himsuta seat 13 and 14, 17 and 18 is available as of now for 1st May.
In HRTC Himgaurav seat 11 and 12, 13 and 14 is available as of now for 1st May.
Book them ASAP before somebody else books them.

For a travel without hick-ups HPTDC or HRTC is advisable. There would not be any extra buses in both the above categories.

I usually don't ride AC Volvo buses but was on 2 occasions:

1. Delhi - Chandigarh on a HRTC Volvo
2. Mandi - Delhi on a HPTDC Volvo

The HRTC had AC vents high above in the centre (above the aisle) and the entire bus was being cooled effectively.. had a comfortable ride.

The HPTDC, however, had its AC vents right below the overhead luggage rack n over our heads so that when left running, they threw the blast right at us while the ambient temperature never dropped to comfortable levels all through the run; as we had to keep switching the vents off to avoid a headache. I was getting an impression that that particular bus was being run under contract for HPTDC by a private operator and the placing of the vents was deliberate. This was in June 2007.

HPTDC now has it's own fleet of VOLVO buses. These buses started operations in October 2010.

HRTC VOLVOs started in 2007 and these buses have not been replaced. These buses now pale in comparison to the HPTDC ones.

hi experts

1) Do we have HPTDC Volvo bus operating in August from Manali to Delhi?

If the response to the above question is yes,

2) Do they operate night services?

3) Do they have sleeper coaches?

4) How long does it take to reach Delhi from Manali? 12 hours?

Please can you let me know the same?

hi Saugata:

a) Yes. I took one in first week of September. August shouldnt be different. Check the website for schedule.
b) It's only a night service. Leaves Manali at 5:30 pm and reaches Delhi next morning at 7:30 am
c) No. Recliner 2x2 Volvo bus.
d) 14. See (b)

pls check http://hptdc.nic.in/bus.htm for more details.

good luck!

Thanks a lot Vaibhav. Just one more question. Is spot booking for these buses available at Manali?

They are (check the HPTDC hotel on mall road in Manali - there's a HPTDC office next door to it from where the bookings can be done) but I certainly wont recommend that unless you're traveling on a weekday.

Sunday evening departures even in august (when it is off season) almost always get sold out.

It becomes difficult to get on the spot booking during season (rush period), though it can be given a try on the day you reach there, as sometime there is cancellation which are filled through counter booking.
