Lightbulb Heavy Rain in Manali today

Hi
Just heard from the resort where i have planned to stay that it is pouring heavily in Manali today. Also heard that when there is heavy rain in Manali there will be deftly snowfall in Rohtang pass and it would be closed.
So i have few questions on this
1. Will i be able to see the snow when i go by the 3rd week of the month of will it melt again by then.
2. Will they close the pass even in Sep mid if there is heavy rain and snow fall.
3. If i cant get to Rohtang when they close the pass, will i be able to see snow anywhere else
4. Is it safe to go to Manali when there is heavy rain? Are the roads v slippery
Please suggest.
we are planning to go there by 3rd week of Sep.
Thanks

Rain has again started lately in mountain regions. But you have 20 days to go. Normailly it does not rain after Sep 15th. Lets hope for the best.

I do not think there would be snowfall in Rohtang. Weather is not so cool for a snowfall. But who can predict the weather? Lets hope for the best from the weather god.

Manali will defenitely be safe in rains too. Roads will not be slippery for the vehicle to skid off the road.

Never heard of Rohtang getting closed in Sep. Chance of snow in sep is very dim.

I do not find the comment reliable. You can call up the HPTDC at Manali to check.

Disagree : snow when I went over the Rothang September 6th last year , massive snowfalls two weeks later , eight dead in an avalanche on the road etc. And again , this last week.
Snowfall can come even before September as well , as in 2006. It will be shortlived, though.

Yes, as I said who can predict the weather. The snow Vistet has mentioned even lasted till Oct first week when I was there. Rohtang was covered with 3-4 inches of snow. Though muddy at lower area, it was clear white at a bit higher places.

I have read a news on tribune india today which says that Rohtang will remain closed between 9 AM to 6 PM for tourist vehicle every tuesday starting today and only HRTC and emergency vehicle will be allowed to cross rohtang. More details in the link below.

Weather in Manali

Hi
http://www.tribuneindia.com/2009/200...imachal.htm#11
Just read that there has been fresh snowfall in Rohtang which sounds to be a great news...but is it possible that they may close Rohtang due to heavy snowfall? If Rohtang is closed is there any other place where we can see snow in Manali in Sep 3rd week? Will there be snow in Solang when Rohtang is closed??

There has also been some mention about heavy landslides...Will it be in the Delhi - Manali route? Is it safe to travel by bus from Delhi to Manali during this period? We are planning to leave to Manali late next week..please suggest...

Thanks in advance

Like they did a week ago ? Sure. How long can it last ? Probably no more than a few days , like last time.

Solang is comparatively low (2500 meters ) and warm. The road to the pass will be open to the snow line , which is called snow point in Manalese : probably around Marhi , 3300-ish. Don´t bank too much on on this , though : snow below 4000 makes short guest appearances this early in September in Himachal.
