You can travel by train upto Chandigarh or a little further upto Kiratpur. From there its by road all the way to Manali.

The Kalka-Shimla route is certainly beautiful, but no point in taking it if your trip dosen't include Shimla and destination is only Manali.

Thanks Shimla.

My main purpose was to enjoy the Kalka - Shimla route and then move on to Manali. How much time will this route take? How do we go to Manali from Shimla?

Also the other route - either Chandigarh or Kiratpur - how much time this route will take and what are the trains?

After a weeks stay in Manali. we plan to go to Vaishnodevi. How do we go there from Manali. Before reaching there if we can spend a few days in places that fall in this route, which would they be?

Cheers !

Sanjay

If you want to experience the K-S train ride in particular, then do go. However, once in Shimla, you'll be doing it grave injustice if you head to Manali straightaway without spending three to four days in the Capital!

Shimla to Manali is a 9-10 hour ride by bus.

Chandigarh- Manali is a 10-11 hour ride by bus, a little less from Kiratpur.

If you have sufficient time, you can take the Manali-Mandi-Palampur-Kangra-Nurpur-Pathankot-Jammu-Vaishno Devi route.

You can take the morning Shatabdi Delhi to Kalka. It leaves around 7 am and arrives in Shimla around 11:50. Then you catch the toy train the rest of the way up. It leaves about 12:15 and arrives in Shimla around 5 o'clock. A very nice way to spend a day in India.

The Shatabdi arrives at Kalka, not Shimla ! Then again, it arrives at 12=00 and the toy train departs at 12=10, which in my opinion is cutting it too fine.

A typo....obviously the Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi arrives in Kalka. Sorry for any confusion. No promises ever when it comes to Indian trains, but we've never had clients miss this connection.

if u want to do vaishno devi & some beautiful place in himachjal & toy train why dont u skip manali & opt for dharamshala, dalhousie-Khajjiar with vaishno devi.
you can take the Pathankot-Jogindernagar toy train and go to either dalhousie or dharamshala from the closest station from there
