4)Chandigarh seems to be too early. Which one do you recommend? Swarghat or Bilaspur? Do you recommend just dropping in in the hotel, or is it better to reserve before hand.

5) Wanted to know if the area is prone to landslides.

6) Some roads are ok? Just wanted to comapre the roads to Ladakh(leh etc). I was there last yr same time. the roads are very narrow and without railings. It seemed a lill risky.
3) Yes. The whole Kullu valley amd upto around Gulaba is no prob.
I took a car similar to yours upto Rohtang last year, but it was tough protecting the under-carriage on the rough sections.

4) Baat ek hi hai - the more you drive on one day, the less the next, and vice versa. Time utna hi lagna hai. Swarghat means you've split the driving into approx 50/50 time-wise. Bilaspur is good too, in fact I've stopped there myself. Or rather, 3 km short, nice hotel with good rooms and food. Chandigarh means you can leave Delhi in the afternoon, and spread the remainder to Manali over the next day - basically that's what Delhi-Manali is, a comfortable 1.5 day drive.
I think you have a similar frame of mind to me about driving - I really believe in splitting Delhi-Manali up, even though lots of people drive through. More enjoyable my way.

5) Not really.

6) Nothing remotely like Ladakh. Like a walk in the park comparatively. Just chill.

Q - How long is the swirling hill journey? I head its just 100kms? From which place can I expect the road to be hilly/swirling?
A little bit from Gara Maura (Punjab border) to Bilaspur, but nothing major. Just chill.
The trucks upto Barmana (ACC factory) are a bigger nuisance.

Excellent.

Thanks to Enlightened Soul and Dilliwala.. Amazing info and tips.
I am all set.

Just 1 concern left, Just saw in the news that NH22 is flooded and ambala and chandigarh are disconnected from Delhi as well. Let's hope thats not the case when we leave.

Regards,
BT

I think Hotel Hilltop in Swarghat would be a good stop. Another good stop is a hotel Green Vally 5 kms before Sundarnagar. This is also a nice privately owned restaurant with a few rooms on the upper floor.
You will enjoy the drive in the hills early morning, the next day.
If you are with kids here is my advise.
Inall the 600 Kms from Delhi - Manali, the only bad stretch with really winding roads which can cause nausea is just the 100 kms from Kiratpur to Sundernagar. You should drive slowly with frequent stops on this 100 kms stretch and if you reach Sundernagar without anybody getting sick, it will be a very pleasant drive from there on. On the other hand if kids get sick on this stretch, it screws up the later part of the journey as well.
If you have kids between 5-10 who are prone to travel sickness, i would recommend 1/2 tablet of avomine in Chandigarh, and most probabaly the'll then sleep through the bad stretch.

Styler.

Oh i just read that you have booked, Hotel Lake view, Bilasput. That's also a good option, so just go and enjoy and have a good trip ahead.
Styler, I found most of the info given on IndiaMike extremely useful in planning my trip. I really appreciate the trouble taken by you and other members to post all their experiences so that others can learn from them. Your tips are very useful bec they give me a fair idea of the route. I would like to know how good or bad is the road from Manali to Rohtang Pass. How are the road conditions? Is it a dangerous route? Will it be snowing there in end October? Looking forward to all accounts of most recent experiences in Manali. Thank you all.

As you get closer to Rohtang, the road gets bad. But it's not dangerous, just heavy traffic.

There might be the odd snowfall by end Oct but nothing heavy, it melts quickly.
Disclaimer: this info based on weather patterns upto last year - this year has been completely crazy (heavy snow in June).

Its very iffy. Actual snow fall starts from mid december onwards. But even with little snowfall in November its very much possible that it might get closed.

Yep, by mid-Nov Rohtang pass tends to be closed. Even if you get into Lahaul, you may not get out till next summer.

ankita4, welcome. Members have suggested Hotel Hilltop at Swarghat. You can also check out Chandigarh if you are interested. Please let me know where you stayed as I am planning a similar trip in Jan.
