Hi,
My husband and me are planning to Leave Chennai on 1st of Oct in a train and reach Delhi on 3rd morning. From there, we want to take a bus ride to Manali. Actually we have not yet booked our tickets, as we were not sure of the boarding point and also worried about the safety. Do you think it is fine, if we book the tickets on reaching delhi? Advice pls. Please check the attached image file of our trip plan and give your comments. Thanks, Thrishna |

Your trip seems that you are just trying to touch the place and go beyound. Better to give some more time in Himachal, otherwise do Agra & Rajasthan, or skip some locations.
Day 2 - Manali to Kaza is around 210 Kms and will take around 6 Hours by taxi. Starting from Manali at 10 AM is not a good idea as you might get caught in Rohtang Jam. Better to start early morning between 4-6. Day 4 - Kaza to Keylong is around 200 Km and will take 6 Hours and not 2 hours as mentioned. Day 5 - Keylong to Kullu is around 170 Kms. Will take around 5 Hours if you do not get caught in Rohtang Jam. Better to stay & sightseeing at Manali (4 Hours from Keylong) and not to go till Kullu. Day 6 - Go to Kullu and catch the bus to Delhi from there. What you want to visit in Kullu? |

Hi,
Thank you Bonded for the reply. I am taking a cab in Himalayas. Thank you Sriprakash for your reply. I consider your suggestion and would skip kullu. why do u say it would take time in Rohtang passs?. Our bus from Delhi reaches Manali at 8.00 AM so after refreshment and getting the taxi, I thought it will take 10.00 AM from Manali to start. I thought of covering kullu as it is on the way. I have no idea as what special is there in Kullu? If i can skip it and stay in Manali thats fine as I have booked my bus ticket from Manali. Regards, Thrishna S |

Approach to rohtang from both sides is through a single laned narrow road, and as the day progresses traffic increases in this stretch (As its the shortest highway route to Keylong/Leh, The other route via Sangla is much longer). So a minor problem with a single vehicle can lead to kilometers of Jam on either side. So the thumb rule is that you should start very early if you are crossing Rohtang.
You can modify the plan as follows 4/10 - Stay in Manali and cover local manali including Vashisth. 5/10 - Start early (preferably between 4-6 AM) for Kaza. Spend some time at Kunzam top. Visit Ki Gompa & Kibber Village. Night at Kaza. 6/10 - Visit Dankar & Tabo Monastery. Night at Kaza 7/10 - Early morning proceed for Keylong and visit Guru Ghantal, Gondla (Other monasteries if you have time). Stay at Keylong. (One more day at Keylong would be better for visit to Udaipur/Trilokinath/Baralacha La) 8/10 - Start early and cross Rohtang to Manali. Spend some time at Rohtang (if not done already), Rahala water fall on the way. Take diversion and visit Solang Valley. Take the evening bus to Delhi. (You are short by at least one more day here also for Nagar/Manikaran) And sorry no time for Kullu (Bijli Mahadev, Bekhli) Manali is between Keylong and Kullu 40 Kms from Kullu. |

Hi SriPrakash,
Thanks a lot for your suggestion. Do you have any update on current status of kunsum pass? Do we need to get a permit from government to visit any of the place, you mentioned? Thanks & Regards, Thrishna |

Kunzam Pass is open. No permit is required for Indians. But do keep an Identity card.

Sometimes the site gets updated a bit late. So better to ask at the local tourism office. |
