Orissa & Varanasi are in opposite directions. So you can try Kolkata-Puri/Bhuvaneswar-Gaya-Varanasi.

Travel from calcutta
I think I've not been clear I know they are in differnet directions. The intention is to visit Varanassi/Bodgaya first then to Orissa and along the coast to Chennai.I just wondered what was easiest with the rail network - either to travel to Varanassi then Bodgaya and onto Orissa or to Bodgaya - varanassi- Orissa.

1. Howrah (Kolkata) > Mughalsarai - Jodhpur Exp. (avail auto from Mughalsarai tp reach Varanasi).
2. Mufgalsarai to Gaya (+bodhgaya) 3. Gya to Puri (A). 2802 +PURSHOTTAM EXP (B). 2816 +PURI EXPRESS) 4. There are trains between Bhubneswar and Chennai. Please refer to this link to spot your preferred trains (depending on your journey date) : http://www.indianrail.gov.in/inet_metro_trns.html - cheers ![]()

I would take the Doon Express # 3009 which leaves Howrah (Kolkata) at 20.35 and arrives Varanasi around 10.20 a.m. Our Indian members often recommend Mugalsarai which is near Varanasi on the main line Howrah-Delhi, a complication which we foreigners often cannot appreciate.
A direct train makes more sense, at least to me, and perhaps to you too. |

2. Mughalsarai saves more than 1 Hr (most of the trains stop at Mughalsarai for quire a long time. And by that time you’ll be reach to the heart of Varanasi). 3. Main area (Biswanath Temple and Dashaswamedh Ghat) of Varanasi is not beside the Varanasi Rly. St. you need to avail same auto / rickshaw ride once again. Hence a direct train is not allowing anyone to land at the doorstep of Baba Biswanath . 4. I was comparing the actual time (dep from Howrah and arrival at Mughalsarai) of Doon Exp and Jodhpur Exp. And I was also trying to remember my personal experience of several journeys on both the trains …… probability of running late / cleanliness (yes I mea it….Jodhpur Exp is more important to the Rly employees also ) / security / dep time and all….. Mughalsarai and Jodhpur Exp combination is my personal choice. Now it is your choice whichone is convenient to your tour plan.. ![]() |

You can also avail Bibhuti Express from Kolkata and it terminates at Varanasi. It is also easier to get tickets in Bibhuti Express.
