Sundries and Accommodations in Kolkata

I have some questions about buying supplies in Kolkata.
1. Can you buy American cigarettes and if so where?
2. Are there places that sell the basics on or near Sudder St.? ie shampoo and soap.
3. Are there any laundry mats on or near Sudder St. ? My guess is that most places will provide a bucket for washing?

Stephan, you'll be able to find these things in any big city in India. If you want the real deal with US cigarettes, buy them duty free before you get to India.

Even travelers on super low budgets get their laundry sent out, for the most part.

No worries about buckets, you'll find them everywhere.

Are there places in the airport that are duty free when you enter?

No there aren't. you need to get that stuff in America.
Duty free is better in the US.
And if you go to the end of Sudder street to Free School st. there is a supermarket there, as well as some much nicer hotels.
Sudder st. can be a bit of a tourist trap, with prices to match.

Take cigarettes with you; they will be cheaper at the duty free shop at whichever airport you fly from. They are even cheaper at the duty free shops in the Indian airport, so get some to take home if they have a brand you like. (If you fly through Frankfurt, cigarettes are $10 more expensive per carton than at Kolkata airport).

There are a few small streetside shops on Sudder Street that shop many brands of shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. They may not have the one you like the best.

No laundromats, but your guesthouse probably has a laundry service; they will wash and iron your clothing for a very low cost -- even if you are staying at Fairlawn.

Seattle has great a duty free shop. Just show your international ticket. If you're flying out of LA, NYC, whatever your last US stop before heading overseas, you can buy your cigs there. Duty free stores are after you've check in, after security check.

Someone told me once the US brand cigs you buy in the india duty free shops aren't the real deal. I bought some in Chennai on the way home a few years back and they tasted stale, not good at all.

As per Indian customs regulations , you can carry only
200 sticks of cigarettes while coming in.

You can get "Marlboro" anywhere in the Park Street
Road side stall, its not an issue of getting American
Cigarettes in Kolkata grey market either.

Happy Puffing .

Cheers
