street food kolkata
Hi this is my very 1st post. We are visiting India in September for 3 weeks. I do not know anything about Indian food whatsoever but would love to try as much as possible. My question is, is there a tour guide that anyone knows of that could take us on a street food tour and could explain what the food is and history or any other relevant points about it? We would like to either join a 1/2 day walking tour of this nature or would like to pay a guide to walk with us for 1/2 day. We could do this ourselves, yes, but could get so much more from the experience with someone who lives there. Any help is appreciated. thank you Oh and I am talking about Kolkata basically, thanks
I do know there is a food/walking tour in Delhi. So more than likely in Kolcatta to.
A guide will be easy to find. Ask your hotel for help if you feel the need to.
If it doesn't exist,don't worry...it is possible
I think this will be a very easy task to accomplish
Have a fabulous time

Dave W. ...OK Thanks I did here about the Majic tours. They have Mumbai Magic, Goa Magic etc. Was the tour any good and do you recommend? Do you actually sit and eat a whole meal with the family or just pick at the end?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the kati rolls which are available on the street that runs between Sudder Street and the New Market. They are wonderful.
Also, if you walk from Sudder Street to the foreign tourist train reservation office, there's a big outdoor food area with tables set up and lots of office workers eating there. They're very friendly!

"Sweets" in India are a phenomenon in their own right; get yourself a box of various goodies of your choice at, you guessed it, the sweets shop. Great to nibble away on on a train ride. Now among all the regional variations, Bengalis and then certainly Kolkatans are renowned for their sweet tooth.
Have a look here to get you going

It was very good and I would recommend. We were a couple and there was one other couple on the tour. We had a walking tour of around two hours through Old Delhi stopping from time to time to sample various items of street food. There was also the option of henna hand painting for the girls.

The second half of the tour was spent in a restored haveli where we had a tour of the house, watched some of the food being cooked, flew kites from the roof and had a full meal. Our thoughts at the time are in this excerpt from our blog

@ mtry just go through sayaks blog and you'll know a lot about kolkata foods also about bengali cuisine.
Sweets are delicacies made from milk and various other things like refined flour etc. Maybe someone here can explain better.

The Bengali sweets, various kinds of "sondesh" are delicious. Have a look at this thread:

If you happen to pass by the main drag of Tangra, would recommend you to Evergreen restaurant 9 south tangra Rd, it has authentic food catered to local folks, do not miss their yon tofu (stuffed tofu with fish) you got to place an order a day or so ahead. It is out of this world beyond deliciously good. It has a long history of 3 generations in the same location started by the grandfather.

No, that is kind of what they are like, aren't they. A note on their being (often) milk-based: They are perishable. I suppose all that sugar will keep them for a while, but I guess preferably eat within a day or so. I think if you buy them pre-packaged, it will specify so.There's nothing to stop you from buying just a one or two pieces at the sweets shop, btw.
