Splurge Hotel in Calcutta/Kolkata

Hi,

I'd like a rec for a nice 'splurge' type of hotel in Calcutta.
We'll be arriving here after a month of basic travel through India and would like somewhere nice (4000 R?) for the last night.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Fairlawn Hotel is a must, you could spend a day just looking around the hotel, and it isn't big.

One of only 2 hotels I've stayed at in India that gets 10 out of 10.
.
SOS: Missing Person...

Please look at this thread, even if you are not in India.: Have you seen Jonathan Spollen?

He could be anywhere now: You might have met him, be able to help, or give information.

It's also in the movie "City of Joy". It's where Patrick Swaze's character, the doctor was staying in Calcutta! I was in Calcutta when they were filming this in 1991. They were filming right by the Salvation Army Hostel ,I think on Sudder St.. There was alot of controversy, because alot of Indians didn't want Calcutta shown to the world as a place of miserable poverty!

yeah but its not 4000 Rs a night

Actually I take that back, I visited the oberoi site and there are rooms for about $119 per night. With tax should be about $135 or so, so its about Rs 6000, pretty good deal I think.

Which begs the obvious question -- which is the other one?

I had a regular evening beer at the Fairlawn, and one evening was shown around the hotel and a few rooms. Certainly not bad, but then again, didn't really quite live up to the hype. What, in your opinion, makes it so special?

I hated the fairlawn. The surroundings are utter crap but judging by their website it looks quite nice. In fact I selected the Fairlawn and made a reservation because it looked the best. But when I got there, The lytton suite was reasonable ($40 US), clean and had really good AC. Be careful about the guys that work there tho. They really scan your stuff looking for things to steal, or that was our impression at least. We avoided that by simply locking up our belongings/ However they are very friendly (despite the obvious notion that they are probably after a tip, but I digress.) But enough of my opinions, I'll let ya'll know that the FAIRLAWN HAS NO A/C ! ONLY FANS. The plus is that the Fairlawn looks like a house and less like a hotel. The minus is that it is on Sudder street. Is all of Kolkata that crappy?

corporate discounts and stuff. last time I stayed a friend of mine in india made a booking through his company which got a discounted rate. most of those who stay at 5 star places in india are business travellers anyways.

Difficult to say, it was as if nothing had changed since British rule, very friendly, small well run hotel, it's a pleasure to walk around the place, and great to relax in the 'Garden'.

It's green almost everywhere, has got too many ornaments, too many photographs, and too much of the days of the British Raj, I love the place.

It's not a shiny new hotel where everything is immaculate; if that's what you're after go elsewhere.

The Hotel has now added air con to most rooms, a pity really, it will take away from the overall experience.

I guess it's like comparing the old First Class (non air con) railway carriages with the new air con First Class carriages, you definitely get a whole lot more for your money in the air con carriage, but at the same time you're closing yourself away from India and paying for the privilege of doing so.

JASVILAS....(JAIPUR), but for totally different reasons, awesome value for money, great food, and fantastic staff & management.

I don't know how to take your post, Are you saying that you stayed at the Fairlawn in a room called 'the Lytton Suite'?

Or did you stay in a suite at the Lytton hotel?

You start off talking about the Fairlawn, then savage either the Fairlawn or the Lytton, then end with more (it does now have air con) about the Fairlawn, all in the same paragraph.

Hi,
http://www.peerlesshotels.com/kolhome.html - situated in the heart of Kolkata.

http://www.calcutta-hotel.com/oberoi_grand.htm - some discount is available in Oberoi Grand.

http://kolkata.regency.hyatt.com/ - 11 kms from International Airport, you can take full advantage of the location. (not sure about the tariff)

Thanks,
Somnath
