is Sonagachi a street name or area name, why can't i find it on the map of Kolkata?

Hi tiger,

Sonagachi is the largest red light district in Kolkata. Here is the link.

I guess if you do decide to visit the red light area (for whatever reasons) the chance of you beeing the attacked tourist will definitely increase.

Nevertheless, you can find it on google earth

I don't think there is anything wrong in asking where the red light district is, to some people it is a tourist attraction, you don't have to buy anything

I guess all red light districts in the world is kinda unsafe. I never visited Sonagachi so i can't tell you, i didn't even know there was a place called Sonagachi untill i stumbled upon this thread

Sonagachi is the biggest brothel In Calcutta but its not famous for its glamour but is famous for its history . Sonagachi is the oldest famous brothel area founded mainly for the entertainment of Britishers. British call girls , angloindian, french , American and Indian Baizis used to be available here during nineteenth century to mid twentieth.

In present days Calcutta face the load of two very poor countries which flow huge no of illegal immigrants here .These are bangladesh and nepal.And there are three very poor states of india surrounding calcutta which are Bihar jharkhand and orissa. Girls in Sonagaachi areas come from these sources.

However don't expect calcutta comparable to brothel areas of
Paris.And dont really think Calcutta is a crime prone place.It is not comparable to the crime statistics of London, Paris ,New york , dhaka or Bangkok with Calcutta .Calcutta is one of the most safest city in India.
