Howrah's the primary station for Kolkata because it's on the west side of the river and thus is reached by all trains coming from the west and south. Sealdah serves destinations to the north and northeast. It's far enough from Howrah station that you'll want to hire a taxi cab. Roughly 5-6 Km.

There are trains leaving for New Jalpaiguri from Howrah too, so the choice is yours !!

Your choice of train should be dictated by the time at which it reaches NJP and not whether it starts from Howrah or Sealdah.

Sealdah is nearer from city center than Howrah. As shimla said you can take NJP bound train from both station.Darjeeling mail , Kanchyankanya/Utterbanga Express from Sealdah. Kamrup, Saraighat Express from Howrah.Other trains towars NJp is there from both station.
