Is there places near, or in a few hours reach, where people from Kolkata go sailing?
We plan to visit Kolkata, and are also extremely sailing interested..... a holiday without sailing seems hard!

Happy for help ,

Hi Anett,
Welcome to Kolkata .
Sailing is not popular in west Bengal. Digha / Shankarpur / Mandarmani these are the nearest sea beaches (5-6 hrs drive from Kolkata) but the option for sailing……….. forget it.

But you can experience a Shikara ride in Kolkata. Yeah, I am not joking, no need to go to Kashmir for a Shikara ride – visit Nalban Boating Complex.

2. http://www.indfy.com/kolkata/places-...g-complex.html
It is a calm & quiet place and ideal for spending a couple of peaceful hours.
Once this boating complex was a venue for the IM meetup (when MikeWill was in Kolkata - http://www.indiamike.com/india/showt...hlight=nalban).

Thanks for your help, Somnath!
It seemed nice.
Is the lake natural, or artificial?
I have today been practicing with my Laser, will join a sailing competition at Friday.

Hi Anett,
This is a natural lake (actually wetland) but nurtured and maintained by the authorities for the visitors. Let us know about your must see list in Kolkata.

Laser !!!! he he…… I thought you are talking about laser beam . Ha ha ha….. That single handed sailboat? Wow, that’s for really experienced sailors isn’t it?

Wish you all the best for the competition. Plz don’t forget to show the winner’s cup .

Laser sailing

This is me sailing earlier this summer in the Laser.
My husband won a Swedish championship two weeks ago, so I have a good coach at home.

Brilliant!

But I don't like sailing anything that does not have facilities for going below for a cup of tea and a nap!

Well, I don't know if I'll ever get Mrs N in a sailing boat!

And, to be honest, it is too long now since I did it myself --- Sure, I could still get a boat to go in approx the right direction, but I'm certainly not competent to skipper and navigate any longer.

One friend I introduced to sailing years back got so thoroughly hooked that she moved from her flat into a boat on a mudbank, owned various dingies, married an ocean yachtsman and, together, they have built a beautiful yacht, which they had to sell their house to complete. That's my vicarious contribution to world seamanship!

My health went through a bad patch; I couldn't keep up the sailing. It was nearly five years before the health got fixed and, by that time, my weekends had got devoted to music classes...

But I still love boats....
